At 17, Deneys Reitz rode out with a Transvaal commando at the start of the 2nd Boer War. He fought at Spion Kop, then joined Smuts鈥檚 raid deep into the British-held Cape Colony. He refused to accept British rule after the war and self-exiled in Madagascar.
