Dr & Dr Pretorius! Cannot express how proud I am of my husband, @_r_pretorius, for successfully defending his PhD at @TUeindhoven.
“This is the reality of women when being harassed: You're frozen, terrified. You try to be polite and smile.
These reactions are often used to undermine their credibility.”
How women IMAGINE they'd react to sexual harassment is wildly different from how they ACTUALLY react when harassed.
Julie Woodzicka & @ProfLaFrance created sexual harassment in lab and tested how women reacted when harassed by a male interviewer in real time.
What happened:🧵

I've come up with a proverb:
When the stomach is empty, it alerts you. When the brain is empty, it alerts others.

Congratulations to Dr @_r_pretorius who defended a brilliant PhD at TUe! I have been friends with Richard since he wrote a super Masters study with me at Stellenbosch University. It was a great joy to be at Richard’s PhD defence. TUe is a beautiful campus! What an experience!
Just (voluntarily) ate a supermarket sandwich for dinner on my first night in a city with an impressive food culture. I guess my integration is fully complete 🥪

(A) If you believe subjectivism about moral obligations, you should also believe subjectivism about epistemic obligations (i.e. you can believe whatever you want), (B) you shouldn't believe subjectivism about epistemic obligations, (C) therefore...
“… it’s hard to make knowledge production happen reliably. There are better and worse ways, but in general, meaning-making argues with agendas and likes to break through timeboxes.”
Turns out I can only sustain energy to write longform about lazy cliches that rankle on a really deep level.... and "Meetings aren't real work" is probably the deepest of all.

This is one of the biggest threats to a successful career for PhDs from an underrepresented background.
Yet, most people don’t know about it.
A thread on the concept of “Abusive Presumption of Incompetence”👇🧵

On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science I mapped the % of female researchers in Europe, according to UNESCO data. 👩🔬👩🏫👩🎓

Working in a large tech company, one thing I wish every team had (but barely any have it):
A “map” of the teams that you depend on, that depend on you, and ones that are coupled to your work in one way or the other.
One map for engineering teams; another for non-eng ones.
Consider your sources of information when contemplating your career path.
Think about:
- The relevance of their experiences to your situation (credibility)
- What your source potentially has to gain or lose by your choice (partiality)
- How they conduct themselves (integrity)

A basic misunderstanding about the difference between medicine and public health is hurting our ability to talk about covid and making us all less safe.
I’m so proud to be building our @AdyenDevs Tech Academy with @mauricioaniche and our other amazing colleagues 🚀 See adyen.com/blog/Taking-onboar… for a taste of what we’ve been up to over the past year or so, and how we help our engineers to onboard and upskill! 📈
Looking forward to it! 👀
Heading to Eindhoven! @cari_pretorius and I will give a guest lecture on our lessons learned with empirical research. And now that we aren't researchers anymore, what would we do differently? See you at TU/e, @aserebrenik and @NathanCassee !

Some good news in the tech industry. Adyen - the lesser-known competitor to Stripe, processing about the same volume as Stripe - confirmed that they keep hiring.
The contrast is stark with Stripe, which let go 14% of staff a week ago.
Good on Adyen for reassuring employees!
