“To me Marlowe is the American mind; a heavy portion of rugged realism, a dash of good hard vulgarity, a strong overtone of strident wit, an equally strong undertone of pure sentimentalism, an ocean of slang, and an utterly unexpected range of sensitivity” - Raymond Chandler

A remarkable and deeply moving photograph capturing the first two minutes of silence in London, 106 years ago on Tuesday 11th November 1919. The first time a grieving nation held its collective breath. Lest we forget.

The Army-Air Force football game is always interesting for me to watch When I graduated from high school - i was broke as a joke - and had no idea how I’d pay for college- until I enlisted in the Army National Guard. Life changing experience, paid for college, and I went to Desert Storm as a Staff Sgt & squad leader But after 10 years in the Army, I went to USAF Officer Training School - and spent 21 years as an Air force officer - worked in intelligence - OIF/OEF and had the greatest life you could imagine; starting as a slick sleeve private and retiring as a Lt Colonel. But tonight it’s Army vs Air Force football! I wish they both could win - and of course they both WILL win because on both teams these young men playing tonight will become officers and defend the greatest country in world history Go Army! Go Air Force! #ArmyAirForceFootball #USAF #usarmy

Rep Kristin Noble has been an excellent State Rep and served her community well. This election was a wipe out. Over the last two years the NH House of Reps did a ton of great work, but they got crushed by issues that aren’t even their responsibility (war, oil prices, tariffs, etc). That happens in some elections, but perhaps at some point when election day is in the rear view mirror, NH voters will recognize the many accomplishments over the last two years. I’m thankful to Kristin Noble for her hard work. @KristinNobleNH

When we were planning the layout of our museum, The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries, we first mapped the paths of the sunbeams streaming through the windows into the trifoirum. This meant we could allow in natural daylight while protecting precious exhibits from light damage. #Museum30 #Lighting

At some point the Republican Party will have to come around to the truth. They just got their faces caved in all over the country because the second term of a Trump presidency has been a disaster. Time to start working on 2028.

Blaming “weak candidates” - blaming the Senate and House leaders; saying it must be cheating; etc These are loser ideas. The reason the GOP got their faces caved in is because the President has failed miserably and the voters have had enough of him. It’s time to focus on the next election and the next set of conservative leaders and the next set of conservative ideas.

To lose Texas, South Carolina, Iowa, Kansas, and Ohio? This is a judgement on the failed Trump presidency. Unless and until the GOP gets to the point where they move on from President Trump - they will never get it together. Learn the lesson of this election. We need conservative leadership - real conservatism, not show-time conservatism; it needs to be genuine and based on real conservative ideas. That starts by understanding this defeat.

Yesterday, I spent a great deal of time organizing books on my book cases - First fiction, then poetry, then non-fiction Alphabetized by author, which my wife thinks is madness. She organizers her books by general “subject” and how they look on the shelf - and somehow always finds the book she is looking for. Am I crazy?

Anyway, the poetry is alphabetized by author and I’m happy to report that the great Joseph Massey is on my bookshelf between Andrew Marvell and Wilfred Owen. Good company - @jmasseypoet

Ten million people have watched a comedian accidentally destroy the entire TED talk industry. He filmed the talk once at TEDxNewYork in 2014 and openly admitted he had nothing to say. Speaking coaches charge $5,000 to teach the exact tricks he used in 6 minutes to say nothing at all. His name is Will Stephen. He is a comedian from Late Night with Seth Meyers who was invited to give a real TED talk and used it to prove the format is a costume anyone can wear. Every TED speaker opens with a question, tells a personal story, cites a scientist, and shows a chart. Stephen did all four in six minutes with zero content. His entire formula fits on a napkin. Gesture with both hands. Ask the audience a question anyone can answer. Tell a mildly embarrassing story so they say aww. Point to a stranger on a slide and call them important. Flash a chart of random numbers. Wear glasses with no lenses. The audience will think you are brilliant. That last trick alone has probably cost the public speaking coaching industry a hundred million dollars in sessions clients should have skipped. "If you watched me on YouTube with the sound off, you would think I was a genius." That is Will Stephen on the TED stage, three minutes into the talk he was paid to give. He wasn't lying. Executives pay $15,000 for a keynote coach and still open with a joke the room never laughs at. Founders rehearse their pitch for weeks and still sound like Stephen at minute four, saying "wagga wah, gabba gabba" with authority. The talk is free on YouTube. The method is written across every TED speaker's playbook for ten years. Stephen still writes for Seth Meyers. Almost none of the ten million viewers have stopped nodding at empty slides since. The formula is free. The willingness to actually say something before your next keynote, pitch, or townhall is the entire edge.

A good thread - important to read. Amusing that the NYT finally got around to it.
NY Times: Yes, Democrats are trying to rig the Alaska Senate election.

I watch Margaret Brennan on @FaceTheNation just about every week - it’s typically a mixed bag; of course almost always biased to the left, But today’s performance on the Alaska election was an all-time low for Margaret as she attacked the Attorney General repeatedly with hypothetical questions and aggressive accusations. But when the conversation turned to the obvious unethical move by Alaska democrats to nominate a fake candidate with the exact same name as the GOP candidate - with the sole intent of confusing voters - Margaret quickly said yup, yup, yup and changed the subject immediately Why does it always have to be so dishonest, margaret? If this type of intentional deception is allowed to stand in Alaska - it will be repeated over and over in our elections. It undermines democracy. But Margaret didn’t want to talk about the crux of the problem. She just wanted to attack with hypotheticals. Margaret should be ashamed.

And Margaret? For goodness sake, stop having Tom Tillis on every week 🤦‍♂️

Marxian materialism, by its own moral theory, works for enlightenment rather than emancipation. Its enlightenment is not meant to make men free, but to make them realize the impossibility of freedom.

It’s quite stunning to see democrats running for office simultaneously posting signs complaining about high property taxes while posting signs against cap on property taxes Here in my town those signs are often standing right next to each other. Weird. New Hampshire, Just remember the Democrats want to massively raise your taxes. They are desperate to create new sales and income taxes. This will never lower your property taxes ( trust me - I lived in massachusetts) NH Democrats have been barking about affordability; but somehow they never ask can we afford government? One thing is clear - we can’t afford the democrats’ vision of a massachusetts style government in New Hampshire

I am remembering a trip to Paris 30 years ago. We stayed in a small family run hotel near the Arc de Triomphe - the French family that ran that hotel were incredibly kind and loved interacting with my toddler daughter We woke up early each morning and walked all over the city. It was beautiful. The French would be up early, washing the side walks in front of their businesses or homes. Everything and everywhere I looked, I saw a testament to a great nation. The Parisians were polite and kind to my young American family - the exact opposite of what I had been told about the French “not liking Americans” We went to all the spots tourists go and encountered nothing but French people; people who were very welcoming and obviously proud of their city, It took 30 years of terrible decision by elected “leaders” to turn Paris into a war zone. French politicians who ultimately didn’t care about the French; who didn’t care about the French families who ran the shops, washed the sidewalks, and most importantly, loved France.
