Embarrassing. Here is yet another reminder that George Washington successfully fought to stop Congress from putting his face on a coin because he didnโ€™t want to be idolized. We donโ€™t worship leaders in America. Thatโ€™s kind of the point of the country.
I love this president and I love this coin.

Beyond irresponsible. What part of enforcing a law passed 86-11 by the Senate does the President and his advisors not understand? Itโ€™s unconscionable that this administration is capitulating to a Russian dictator who illegally invaded Ukraine and butchers innocent civilians every single day. If the President wants to actually bring down energy prices, he can do it by solving the Iran problem, not by doing a solid for Vladimir Putin. apnews.com/article/russia-saโ€ฆ

Abundance usually gets explained as a list of problems: zoning, permits, licensing, slow approvals. Hereโ€™s what we'd actually get if we fixed them: Lunch costs $4, like it does in Japan and Singapore. Most US cities require three or four separate sinks, which makes a kitchen under 200 square feet nearly impossible. Anyone can open an owl cafe or a vegan lesbian bookstore. Japan is full of tiny, oddly specific businesses run by one or two people. They survive because small spaces are cheap and enough people live close enough to walk in. A room in a big city for $400 a month. These buildings housed millions of low-income and older Americans until cities banned most of them by the 1980s. A three-bedroom apartment you can stay in after you have a kid. US codes require two staircases in buildings over three stories, so family-sized units only fit on the corners. Most of the world allows one staircase. A new electric car for about $10,000. China sells these globally. Americans can't buy it. A government so dependable it's boring. When a loved one dies, you report it once instead of to every agency. We can decide to make it happen here. The full list has 16 things, from taco trucks on every corner to no more pandemics. I wrote this to also announce that today is DC Abundance's official launch! If youโ€™re in DC, come celebrate and see the G.O.A.T. Derek Thompson speak!

This story is so perverse. This man joined the Army to serve his country and protect his wifeโ€”who's been here since she was 6โ€”from deportation. Instead, it appears the military shared her information with ICE. Nauseating.
NEW: ICE is trying to deport a mother of 4 while her husband is at Fort Benning in Army basic training. When she went to pick up the family's military IDs, Navy personnel turned her over to ICE. She's been in the US since age six. Story with @nancyayoussef theatlantic.com/politics/202โ€ฆ

If true, this is a very big deal. Not just in terms of Ukrainian lives that were lost. Iโ€™m not sure if people realize that this put the lives of US embassy officials and US citizens at large in Ukraine at great risk. This is madness. The White House did this. Iโ€™ve never seen anything like this in my career. Heads should roll. If trueโ€ฆ
NEW: The order to limit a satellite system used by Ukraine for battlefield communications and drone operations came from inside the White House, according to two US officials and a Western official briefed on the matter.

Just to be clear about what happened here: - Trump cut a deal with Putin that will route ~$4B of American dollars to Russia. That money will be used to fund the war. - Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" that was probably Putin's idea, surprised the Ukrainians, is structured to benefit Russia, and was immediately broken by the Russian military. - When Zelensky spoke candidly about these terrible deals, the US cut off Starlink access in ways that made it harder for Ukraine to intercept Russian drones, and seemingly withheld intel about ballistic missile attacks. - Last week alone, Russia killed more than 150 civilians in Ukraine, including 33 in one strike on a bus stop. Trump is de facto asking @ZelenskyyUa to surrender. Zelensky can throw on a suit, he can endure lectures from whiny little bitches like @JDVance, but he can't lay down and die just because Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize.
I fear that President Zelensky has gotten terrible advice on handling his relations with President Trump, and at the absolute worst possible time before what looks like a very difficult winter.

Very good piece about a striking contrast: the rush to defend John Bolton and the muted response to something worse: the targeting of Ilhan Omar.
When Trump raided John Bolton last year it was met w/ immediate outrage in the opinion pages of NYT, WSJ, WaPo, Atlantic & New Yorker. Since Rep Omar was raided Monโ€“โ€“and subsquently threatened w/ deportationโ€“โ€“these same outlets have been silent. I wrote about this double standard
