Before a Swaminarayan sadhu comes to your home, two or three attendants come first and give instructions: ‘Tell the women in the house not to come outside.’ You have to follow this if you want ‘Pujya Swamiji’ to visit your home.
In their temples too, you can see boards saying, ‘Women aren’t allowed beyond this point.’ Women cannot go near the sanctum sanctorum. Even in sabhas, women have to sit in a way the sadhu giving the pravachan cannot see them.
Gujaratis have been seeing all this for years. Now, after the Paris Eiffel Tower episode, the world is also getting to know about this absurd practice.
Indeed it is an absurd practice. If there have to be such rules for sadhus, they can call themselves whatever they want but not sadhus.
Even if we accept that a sect has the right to make its own rules and follow them, it cannot place the burden of those rules on society or on a section of society.
If a sadhu is not supposed to come in contact with women, then he should avoid public places where women are present. Stay in your temples and do bhajan-kirtan.
The rules are made by the sect. Stopping women so that those rules can be followed is both strange and ridiculous.
The world doesn’t run according to you. Even the common man understands this basic thing today. It is high time that ‘revered’ and ‘highly knowledgeable’ sadhus understood it too.

सोनम वांगचुक उपोषण सोडा ही विनंती!
2006 डिसेंबर मध्ये डॉ नरेंद्र दाभोलकरांनी जादूटोणा विरोधी कायदा व्हावा या मागणीसाठी लातूरच्या गांधी चौकात उपोषण केले होते. हे उपोषण दहा दिवस चालले. विलासराव देशमुख तेव्हा मुख्यमंत्री होते.
या उपोषण व धरणे आंदोलनाला समाज, प्रसारमाध्यमे यांतून चांगला प्रतिसाद मिळाला, पण सरकारने त्याकडे संपूर्ण दुर्लक्ष केले.
मुख्यमंत्र्यांच्या मतदारसंघात उपोषण करण्याच्या निर्णयाबद्दल डॉ नरेंद्र दाभोलकर अंधश्रद्धा निर्मूलन वार्तापत्रात लिहितात की, 'मुख्यमंत्र्यांकडे मागणी करत याचकाच्या भूमिकेत फिरण्यापेक्षा चळवळीचे तेज प्रगट करत त्या आधारे मागणी मान्य करून घेणे अधिक श्रेयस्कर आहे. संघटना व चळवळी अशा लढ्यांमधूनच वाढतात. अर्ज विनंती मधून नाही.' त्यापुढे ते उपोषणामागील नैतिक सत्याग्रही भूमिकेचा उल्लेख करतात व लिहितात की.. ही आत्मक्लेषाने शासनाच्या व जनतेच्या सदसद्विवेकबुद्धीला घातलेली साद आहे.
डॉ दाभोलकरांनी हे उपोषण सोडावे यासाठी सरकारकडून कोणतेही प्रयत्न करण्यात आले नाहीत. दहा दिवसानंतर त्यांनी स्वतःहून उपोषण थांबवले. यात कोणतीही हार किंवा अपमान नाही ही त्यांची भूमिका होती. माझ्याव्यतिरिक्त दुसरे कोणीही माझा अपमान करू शकत नाही ही विवेकनिष्ठ मानसोपचार पद्धतीची धारणा देखील त्यामागे होती.
डॉ दाभोलकर पुढे म्हणतात की 'प्रत्येक आव्हान ही एक संधी असते. कायद्याबाबत होणारा विलंब ही समाजाचे कायद्याबाबत प्रबोधन करण्याची संधी म्हणून आपण पाहत आहोत. उपोषणामुळे ही घुसळण प्रचंड प्रमाणात घडली. ही वाटचाल आज ना उद्या पण विजयाकडे जाते याबाबत मी निःशंक आहे. '
उपोषणाने सुरू झालेली सामाजिक घुसळण पुढे नेण्यासाठी सोनम वांगचुक तुम्ही हवे आहात. तुम्ही उपोषण सोडावे अशी विनंती आहे.

Morality, fairness, and justice were the unwritten critical conditions to follow for people in power since the early days of civilisation. Even if they didn’t follow them, they made efforts that history remembers them as the good guys who tried.
And then sometime in the last two decades (after a century of dabbling with the idea) a new set of kings arrived who said - what if we choose to be openly immoral, unjust, and even vile. What could go wrong (for us)?
And nothing did - in fact their powers, mandates, and evilness kept on increasing. They don’t care about history or the written word documenting their deeds - in fact have an active disdain for it. Both history and future are just tools to their agenda - of accumulating more power in the present.
And the most fascinating paradox hidden in this choice is that these kings have proudly made religion and their own religious identities as the central argument to their position.
Religion - a way of life that above all surmises that actions have consequences (even for Gods) - being used by people who firmly believe in zero consequences. These kings, more than even the godless atheists, know there are no gods, no afterlife, no rebirths, and no punishment here or anywhere else.
Nihilist power-grabbers have taken over the world while the common believers are left to deal with the consequences.
It’s not just the end of ethics, it’s the end of the biggest lure of the religions itself - that in the end, there’s justice. It’s the end of religion.
