Self-care starts with taking care of your health!
Through dance and movement, CEHURD joined the 5th Breast Cancer Awareness Public Dance Workout to promote self-care, encourage early detection and celebrate the resilience of cancer survivors.
Thank you to Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation (@UWOCASOfficial) and everyone who participated in raising breast cancer awareness.
#MoveForHer #SelfCare #EarlyDetectionSavesLives
โThe high cost of cancer care remains a major burden for patients and their families. Through your support, @UWOCASOfficial provides free counselling, patient navigation and, where resources allow, food and transport assistance to patients in need.
As we remember those we have lost, stand with those still fighting and celebrate survivors, we must recognise that survivorship also comes with challenges. Many continue to live with treatment side effects, recurrence or metastatic cancer, while caregivers carry significant emotional and financial burdens.
We call on @GovUganda to invest in affordable cancer care, diagnostic services and essential medicines. We also urge employers and communities to treat people living with cancer with dignity and reject the stigma and discrimination they face.
A cancer diagnosis is burdensome enough. Our first response should be simple: How do we help this person fight?
Nobody should face cancer alone. Let us use our voices, positions and resources to support those affected and make screening, treatment and compassionate care accessible to all.โ
~ Remarks by Dr Catherine Promise Biira (@CbPromise), Board Chairperson, UWOCASO during the
5th Breast Cancer Awareness Public Dance Workout
#MoveForHer #BreastCancerAwareness #EarlyDetectionSavesLives
โPhysical activity is an important part of cancer prevention, and activities such as dance workouts are a practical way to encourage healthier lifestyles. As an organisation, we use these activities to raise awareness about breast cancer and the role each of us can play in reducing cancer risk.
I encourage you to embrace physical activity and continue organising similar initiatives within your respective institutions. Let us make exercise part of our everyday lives and keep breast cancer awareness and prevention on the agenda.โ
~ Gertrude Nakigude, CEO of @UWOCASOfficial and a 24-year breast cancer survivor.

Launched in 2022, the annual dance workout brings together cancer survivors, families, partners and the public to raise awareness, promote early detection and mobilise support for people affected by cancer.
Founded by breast cancer survivors in 2006, UWOCASO supports women affected by cancer and their families through awareness, counselling, supportive care and advocacy.
In Uganda, up to 89% of women with breast cancer are diagnosed at a late stage, making timely detection and access to care especially important.
Through this initiative, we join other stakeholders in emphasising the need for regular screening, timely diagnosis and treatment, while celebrating the resilience of survivors.

โThe success of our cases, the precedents we establish and the remedies we secure rarely reflect the emotional, psychological and personal sacrifices involved. We must recognise that lawyers handling these cases also need psychosocial support. At CEHURD, this need has been recognised through staff medical insurance, and the organisation is in the process of engaging a counsellor on retainer to support both staff and clients.
As legal practitioners, we must go beyond winning cases to address the structural inequalities that perpetuate ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป๐ท๐๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ. Our responsibility is to make the law an effective instrument for advancing human dignity, equality and social justice.โ

His panel discussion on โCase Handling by Litigants: Empathy vs. Following Rules of Procedure in the Courtroomโ, emphasised the importance of empathy, professionalism and respect in legal practice. He urged lawyers to treat clients with dignity, recognise the experiences of everyone in the courtroom and uphold their duties to clients, the court and the public.
He cautioned that unprofessional conduct, missed court appearances and disrespectful treatment of clients can undermine public confidence in the justice system. He also called on legal practitioners handling sensitive cases, particularly sexual offence cases, to approach proceedings with compassion, recognising the potential trauma experienced by those seeking justice.

โWhile workplace policies are important in creating supportive environments for #MentalHealth, personal #SelfCare remains very important. Lawyers handling demanding workloads and emotionally difficult cases need to develop practical habits that support their well-being, set healthy boundaries, manage their time effectively and make time to rest and reflect.
Employers may appreciate dedication and long working hours, but individuals must also take responsibility for their own health. Legal practitioners should avoid sacrificing their well-being in the pursuit of professional success and recognise that their health should not be compromised by the demands of their work. Prioritising self-care is essential to sustaining their well-being and their ability to serve clients effectively.โ

โMental health conditions can affect anyone, regardless of their profession or social standing. Lawyers involved in reproductive justice litigation face significant pressures, including demanding workloads, public scrutiny, exposure to traumatic cases and threats to their safety.
Mental illness should not be viewed as a sign of weakness. Legal practitioners need to recognise signs of psychological distress, seek professional support and uphold ethical standards when handling sensitive cases. It is also important to create supportive work environments where mental health challenges can be acknowledged without stigma, enabling advocates to protect their well-being while serving their clients effectively.โ

โWhen you work in human rights, you become emotionally invested in the work. You listen to peopleโs painful experiences, witness injustice and carry these stories long after leaving the courtroom. We celebrate victories and landmark judgments, but we rarely talk about what the work costs the lawyers themselves, their families, their relationships and their peace of mind.
We cannot keep celebrating sacrifice without asking what that sacrifice is costing. Lawyers are human beings too. They need space to rest, people they can talk to and institutions that care about the people doing the work, not just the work itself.
We must also prepare the next generation to take over, transfer the knowledge we have accumulated and build institutions that can sustain the work beyond individual leaders. Eventually, we all have to step aside, and the question should not simply be what happens to us, but what happens to the work.
We must continue defending human rights, but we cannot destroy ourselves in the process. The work matters, justice matters and human rights matter, but the people doing the work matter too. Even those who fight for others need care, support and rest.โ

โMental health and psychosocial well-being are essential to sustainable reproductive justice lawyering. Lawyers are repeatedly exposed to distressing cases, hostile working environments and pressure to remain composed, yet the emotional toll of this work is often overlooked. We must recognise that lawyersโ well-being is part of professional competence and create supportive environments where they can seek help without stigma. This conversation provides an opportunity to examine the legal, institutional, cultural and personal barriers facing reproductive justice lawyers in Uganda and identify ways to better support those who work to advance human rights.โ
