Great to speak with @damienics just ahead of the plenum
As China’s fifth plenum wraps up, Xi is widely expected to seek a fourth term next year. Damien Ma @damienics with @celiahatton on @bbcworldservice this week: “China’s really had only two models” — Mao’s (serve until you can’t) or Deng’s (step down formally but keep real authority and seniority behind the scenes). bbc.com/audio/play/p0pjpv9t

I loved interviewing researcher Liu Jieyu from SOAS - on her longitudinal study of what really goes on in Chinese families and a discussion that took an unexpected turn. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct8j…

Horrifying scenes in Afghanistan - the Taliban opened fire at a protest against the arrest of women for dress code violations. Footage shows shots being fired and men beating protesters in the city of Herat. Two people were reportedly killed at the protest but Taliban police in Herat denied there were any deaths. #afghanistan #herat #protest #afghanwomen #skynews

Three months later, this is my last @washingtonpost story — delayed because nearly everyone involved in it was laid off. I am very grateful to newsroom friends who made sure it published anyway, and to brave Roman Mongold and his family for their time. wapo.st/4cNY7Cm

This conversation is making me miss Beijing, a complex and dynamic city.
I love this city dearly. It’s home to me in every sense of the word. Having spent my early childhood there I’ve seen Beijing in all its contradictions: the dazzling and the decaying, the hopeful and the hard edged. I still think about those long bus rides I used to take every weekend for math camps and violin classes (the classic weekend itinerary of a dutiful grade school Chinese kid lol... though I was an epic fail at violin...) From the suburb then through Qinghe, Zhong Guancun, and Gu Lou and back, the route passed empty lots, migrant towns, the heart of China’s Silicon Valley, and the old hutong neighborhoods where time itself seems to move slower. You see the full spectrum of life. It’s a city of immense complexity, impossible to capture in a single narrative.

Talked to friends back in China and wanted to see how they feel/see the “Stimulus.” Everyone just sounded confused, “what stimulus?” One said Hermes just did a 50% sale in Hangzhou. (Must be the only Hermes sale I have heard of.)
