If you've noticed a distinct dialect emerging in frontier AI models and struggled to understand what they're talking about, you're not crazy!
We turned to psycholinguistics to investigate what makes the writing style so weird, and why this might be happening
🚨New preprint! 🧵

My IIIF image viewer, Triiiceratops, through the alpha and release candidate phase and now has a version 1 release.
It has the smallest bundle size of any IIIF viewer I
know of while being the most fully featured viewer I know of

In addition to the new Daily Dose of Scripture website, the daily dose ministry is launch a "Polyglot Reader" that puts the Hebrew Old Testament, Septuagint, Latin Vulgate, Aramaic Targum, and ESV side by side, with daily videos tagged, and with audio bibles.
If you notice at the start of Genesis 1, we have videos over Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, and Latin.
Let me know what you think.

I think we can see indirect evidence of whatever changes OpenAI made to GPT 6’s architecture in its success in handwriting. GPT-6 Astra is the first reasoning model where transcription accuracy for handwriting actually improves with more thinking/effort.
This might sound counterintuitive, but since O1 it’s been the case across Gemini, Claude, and Grok. My intuition is that these models could not improve visual reasoning through effort as it often made them second guess their initial judgements (we saw this with the clock tests too). So the best results on handwriting always came from minimal thinking.
Looks like Astra is indeed doing something new inside because that trend has now reversed which ai think is a significant signal far more important than the idiosyncratic nature of historical handwriting might suggest.
Deciphering historical handwriting is a visual task to about 95% accuracy and then above that, it increasingly becomes a reasoning/logic task: using a combination of document context, outside knowledge, and deductive logic to get to 100% (which is unobtainable even for humans). It requires symbolic reasoning and a world model (ie the past is composed of different elements than the present yet can coexist with the present) to get there.
We saw glimmers of this last year with Gemini 3, but this is a real signal that the models have started to crack symbolic reasoning.
On high, it scores 2% modified word error rate (WER) and 4% character error rate (CER) — where lower is better.
On low it scores 2.41% modified WER and 4.74% CER.
Interesting times!

Struggling with transliterating text from Hebrew?
I highly recommend the hebrewtransliteration.app created by @charles_loder.
To use it, I suggest first typing (or pasting) your Hebrew text into the nakdan.dicta.org.il/ app to vowelize the text.
After making sure that the app did it correctly (you can tweak the results if necessary), copy the vowelized text into hebrewtransliteration.app/
Both apps are free and require no signing up!

I've finally decided to close this account.
But I'd love to stay in contact!
Please feel more than free to contact me via the link in my bio.
I'll continue to post over there.
I'll wait a few days for this message to do the rounds before pressing the big red button.

Want an easy way to find Scripture references in texts? Now you can. I modified our AI pipeline to perform scripture detection. It's fully open-source and found here (next post). It leverages Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview (API key required).

I've really enjoyed my time with @Google 's Gemini for the past year.
I've neen working on this new app for a while that can leverage the features of Gemini for cultural heritage. It allows you to process a IIIF Manifest (or PDF, dir of images, single image) to do transcription with structured metadata, facing translation, NER, entity linking to Wikidata (with tool calling, grounding, and some fun little tricks), and finally allows you to chat with the image or the generated data to dissect what you are reading.
At the project level, you can even cluster entities to only reconcile them once and then apply the reconciliation back across all the images.
The best part? All you need is a Google API key!
It's nearly ready to share.

Introducing FreeFlow! Want a free open-source way to annotate data and train Yolo models? FreeFlow is a flask app that lets you annotate data, train Yolo models locally or via @HuggingFace jobs, and then use those models in-the-loop to annotate. Special thanks to @vanstriendaniel for testing and improving it!
Good for projects with private data. Full disclosure. This is vibe coded.

You can now run OCR over Yiddish archival pages with Qwen 3 VL!
**Take the CER and WER with a grain of salt. The test data mimics the training data very closely. This should work very well for clean docs, but the big benefit of a VLM, that knowledge will transfer to messy archival docs.

Small models work great for GLAM but there aren't enough examples.
With @wjb_mattingly I'm launching small-models-for-glam on @huggingface to create and curate models that run on modest hardware and address GLAM use cases.
More coming soon. Follow the org to keep up to date!

New @huggingface BigLAM dataset: 9,363 OA books with page images + rich MARC metadata for evaluating (and training) VLMs on metadata extraction.
Libraries are starting to explore AI-assisted cataloguing, but we lack public evaluation data. Hoping this helps fill that gap.

TIL there is an Arabic model for GLiNER! I don't personally read Arabic, but I'm sitting with those who do and the output is consistently good. Right-to-left languages are often underrepresented in NER and have been for a while. This is wonderful to see.

Holy Guacamole, Batman, these tiny VLMs actually work pretty well on medieval Latin handwriting out-of-the-box!!!? This is a line-level caroline miniscule benchmark. Definitely going to be finetuning this in the very near future. Nice work, Liquid AI.
Liquid just released two 450M and 1.6B param VLMs!
They're super fast and leverage SigLIP2 NaFlex encoders to handle native resolutions without distortion.
