Overreach - CIJ Logan Symposium Updates: Talk highlights
📆 30 October 2026
📍 The Barbican (@BarbicanCentre)
🔦 Talks highlight: The Epstein Files
We don’t know the full extent of the Jeffrey Epstein story because of U.S. government transparency: it was forced out, page by page, by investigative reporters.
Khadeeja Safdar's (@khadeeja_safdar) @WSJ investigation (with Joe Palazzolo @joe_palazzolo) uncovered the 2003 "birthday book" and exposed the government's handling of the Epstein files — Pulitzer-finalist work that helped trigger the release of more than three million Justice Department documents and drew a $10 billion defamation lawsuit from President Trump.
Jason Leopold (@JasonLeopold) and his team @Bloomberg sued the FBI and DOJ for the files themselves, revealing the chaotic, million-dollar redaction effort behind the government's review.
Together they discuss how the story was built: cultivating sources, using AI to manage all the information and make connections between it, weaponising public records law, and then publishing under legal threat. They also ruminate on what the Epstein files and files like them reveal about official secrecy - and how to beat it. Contributing Chair: Kirsten Danis (@kirstendanis), Investigations Editor, @nytimes.

Impact is a buzzword in journalism these days. It is no longer enough to produce well-researched, well written investigations, the audience wants to know, but did it make any difference?
Since we started our Open Climate Reporting Initiative #OCRI nearly 5 years ago, we set ourselves a tough task to teach investigative skills with a specific focus on climate investigations. And we've been very successful!
These featured stories from our OCRI graduates show how climate change impacts livelihoods, health, migration, nature, local communities and economies.

Have you heard about Overreach - CIJ Logan Symposium 2026 on 30 October?
Our director @James__Harkin talks to The Reva & David Logan Foundation on what to expect, how it is different from other journalism events and why spending a day with us at the Beautiful @BarbicanCentre is worth it.
"I honestly believe that this year’s symposium will be the best I’ve ever seen and you will find it nowhere else in the world. Because we stay close to our original mission to speak beyond the echo chamber, we’re capable of getting the best journalists on earth as well as people you’ve never heard of, with ideas that are super interesting and not discussed at any other journalism conference.
