Upcoming CIK Talk Al-Bukhārī: The Life, Theology and Legal Thought of Islam’s Foremost Traditionist Presented by: Dr. Belal Alabbas (Cambridge Muslim College, United Kingdom) Sunday, October 25 at 12 PM EST 14 Jumādā al-Ūlā 1448 AH Register at: cikedu.org/ciktalks Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī (d. 256/870) is one of the most distinguished figures in Islamic intellectual history. His Ṣaḥīḥ is revered as the most authoritative collection of Prophetic traditions in Sunni Islam and is the most cited book in Islamic history. For centuries it was more than a reference work. It was recited for blessing, to seek salvation, and even to pray for rain. Yet the man behind it has rarely been the subject of sustained critical study. In this CIK Talk, Dr. Belal Alabbas presents his new monograph, Al-Bukhārī: The Life, Theology and Legal Thought of Islam's Foremost Traditionist (Edinburgh University Press, 2026). It is the first comprehensive critical biography of the Imam. Dr. Alabbas will take us through: - Life and context: al-Bukhārī's travels in collecting and teaching hadith, and the political and intellectual landscape that shaped him. - The making of the Ṣaḥīḥ: the purpose, composition, and early transmission of his works. - Hadith criticism: the methods and principles behind his judgements on reports and transmitters. - The jurist: his legal principles and his polemics with Ahl al-Raʾy, including the cases where he openly challenged Ḥanafī authorities. The talk closes by looking beyond al-Bukhārī himself: what his career tells us about Ahl al-Ḥadīth and the formation of Sunni Islam. It will interest students of hadith, law, theology and early Islamic history, and anyone who wants to understand the scholar behind one of Islam's most revered books. A Q&A session will follow. About the Presenter: Dr. Belal Alabbas is a scholar of Islamic intellectual history, with particular expertise in the formative and classical periods of Islam (7th–15th centuries). His research explores the development, transmission and interpretation of the hadith corpus, as well as broader questions of hermeneutics and the evolution of Islamic legal theory. He is especially interested in how early Muslim scholars understood authoritative texts and how their interpretive methods shaped Islamic law across different regions and intellectual traditions. He received his undergraduate training in Islamic studies at Al-Azhar University, one of the most prestigious centres of Islamic learning, where he developed a strong foundation in Islamic and religious studies. He later pursued doctoral studies at the University of Oxford, completing a DPhil in the History of the Islamicate World. Dr Alabbas has held academic appointments at several leading UK institutions, including lectureships at the University of Nottingham and the University of Bristol. He was also awarded a British Academy International Fellowship, which he held at the University of Exeter, where he continued to advance his research and collaborate with scholars working on Islamic history and thought. His work contributes to a deeper understanding of how Islamic intellectual traditions were formed, debated and transmitted, offering insights that are relevant not only to historians of Islam but also to scholars interested in law, religion, and the dynamics of textual interpretation more broadly. He has successfully managed research projects on early Islamic debates on hadith and hermeneutical traditions. These projects have resulted in publications that analyse competing approaches to hadith and hermeneutics across Muslim intellectual traditions. He has also recently published a monograph on al-Bukhārī (d. 870), widely regarded as the most influential hadith scholar in Islamic history. Beyond his research, Dr Alabbas has organised numerous conferences and delivered presentations at leading institutions on hadith, hermeneutics and legal authority. Since 2017, he has convened international events that bring scholars together to share methods for studying early Islamic sources
