The FAA is reinstating its Flight Deck Training program, giving air traffic controllers jumpseat access on commercial, general aviation and military flights.
The program, paused at the start of the pandemic, lets controllers observe pilot workload, cockpit procedures and how ATC instructions affect flight crews. The FAA worked with NATCA to restore it, and all major U.S. airlines have agreed to participate.
Controllers apply electronically for specific flights and must identify a training objective. Each controller may fly two commercial or general aviation flights and one military flight per year, subject to facility staffing. Participants go through multiple vetting steps at the airport and aircraft and submit a report after each flight.
The FAA said early testing has helped controllers understand when to refrain from issuing complex instructions and how changes such as a new landing runway affect pilot workload. The formal program is expected to start after Thanksgiving.

My favorite seaplane is the MC.72, and I think she’d fit right in with the rest of the Schneider airplanes in Porco Rosso, don’t you?
