This weekend, a massive winter storm battered Gaza. Our teams report that thousands of tents were damaged or destroyed. Strong winds tore away makeshift shelters, while families waded through centimetres-deep floodwaters as rain soaked their few remaining belongings. People were left cold and wet, with nowhere else to go. This is the fourth winter that displaced Palestinians have been forced to endure these conditions. Nearly 13 months after the ceasefire agreement, 2.1 million Palestinians are confined to just 30% of Gaza. Nearly one million people are living in areas at medium to high risk of flooding. Yesterday’s storm exposed the consequences of years of restrictions and shortages. There is not enough heavy machinery in Gaza to prepare sites and mitigate flooding. Even the machinery that is available cannot operate properly because of shortages of engine oil. Those organisations who support with shelter are mobilising to deliver tents and essential household items to families who have lost what little they had. But there are not enough tents and supplies to meet the scale of the need, let alone replace those damaged by the storm. And tents and tarpaulins are not the answer to Gaza’s winter. They cannot withstand heavy rain and strong winds, and many are already worn out after months of use far beyond their intended lifespan. In August, the NRC-led Palestine Shelter Cluster reported that 1.98 million people – 94% of Gaza’s population – needed shelter assistance. Since then, only a fraction of the required supplies have entered, while severe funding gaps are forcing humanitarian agencies to do more with less. We must move beyond repeatedly replacing inadequate tents and scale up transitional shelters that offer families more durable protection. We urgently need heavy machinery, equipment and supplies to enter Gaza to support flood mitigation, clear rubble and prepare safer sites. Palestinians have the right to receive the assistance they need. States must press Israeli authorities to uphold their obligations and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and essential materials. Palestinians must not face another winter without adequate shelter. They cannot wait.

🇵🇸 About 70,000 tents sheltering displaced Palestinians flooded within 12 hours as the first winter storm hit Gaza, the Government Media Office said Saturday. Civil Defense said it received about 1,500 distress calls. Dozens of walls and three abandoned houses collapsed, and injuries were reported across Gaza. Initial losses are estimated at $3 million. Media office adviser Taysir Muheisen said Gaza needs 260,000 new tents to replace worn-out shelters, most of them in use for nearly three years, and more than 2,000 bomb-damaged homes are at risk of collapse. Officials place blame on Israel and the international community, which still blocks shelter and reconstruction materials more than a year into the “ceasefire.” Israel also deliberately destroyed hundreds of bulldozers, water pumps and other vehicles that rescue crews need, leaving them short of equipment and fuel. COGAT, the Israeli military body in charge of restricting aid into Gaza, claimed four vacuum trucks, used to pump out sewage and standing water, entered this week.
🚨 HORRIFIC SCENES IN GAZA: Displaced families’ tents are completely submerged in floodwater. After Israel destroyed their homes, families are now left with nothing but flooded tents, with nowhere else to go.

📍 BREAKING Israeli soldiers detain two Canadians as part of a group of international volunteers helping Palestinians with their olive harvest. Foreign journalists & 15 other volunteers also arrested. Israel wants no witnesses to its crimes. Story still developing.

Serving in a military commiting genocide is inconsistent with the values and obligations we hold as health care providers. Regulatory bodies should investigate those health providers who served in Israel genocidal forces If you agree, sign here nwmd.social/s/copylink/4w6Ea…

🚨SEND A LETTER: Investigate health workers who joined the IOF🚨 In 2025, my workplace brought a highest-level professionalism complaint against me for my Palestine advocacy – without providing a single concrete example of misconduct. When I applied for my annual license renewal, I had to disclose this to the college that regulates doctors along with a detailed letter from my lawyer, not knowing if I would face barriers renewing my medical license. Meanwhile, doctors who take leaves to "serve" in the Israeli military face no institutional screening or required regulatory disclosure when they return – even though that military is committing genocide. This double standard in medical regulation cannot stand. Demand that Canadian health regulators hold all members accountable and that they investigate health workers who participate in militaries accused of human rights violations. Send a letter here: cjpme.org/no_idf_healthcare
Take action! Since the beginning of the genocide, a number of Canadian-licensed health workers and educators have taken approved leaves of absence to serve in the Israeli military.

When Montreal city council members advocated for suspending institutional ties with Israel, opponents of the motion argued against "importing a foreign conflict," and Mayor @SorayaMartinezF claimed it was "not our role" to have a position on foreign affairs. Just a few months later, and the City is now giving Israeli representatives a warm official welcome. This was never about "foreign" vs "domestic" issues, it was always about the City choosing to maintain ties with a genocidal regime. Shame on them.
Why is the City of Montreal meeting with officials from a rogue state currently engaged in genocide?

A new @CBC Ombud review of an article by @cbcchrisbrown dissuades political analysts from critiques that might be perceived as "singling out Israel for blame." This sets a chilling precedent that severely restricts fair and fact-based commentary on Israel. Read our letter of concern:

The @CBC's Ombud said in a new review that it was "highly questionable" for @cbcchrisbrown to write that Israel "has shown little appetite for the establishment of a Palestinian state." Alarming for such handcuffs to be put on one of the outlet's premier foreign correspondents.

NEW: Stephen Harper lauds genocidal war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu as “probably the smartest, best-read, most-articulate foreign leader I have met” in his newly published memoir. Amid an olive harvest when state-backed Israeli settlers have violently attacked foreign diplomats and journalists for accompanying Palestinian farmers in their fields, this is an important act by Canadian diplomats. To address the underlying issue of colonial state-settler violence, however, Canada must impose meaningful sanctions on the settlement enterprise and all those who support and profit from them.
Among the olive trees in #Taybeh, #Kobar, #Salfit and #Jenin, we stood alongside Palestinian farmers in solidarity harvesting olives. The olive harvest remains an economic lifeline and a symbol of #Palestinian connection to the land. #oliveharvest
