Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire (@VictoireUmuhoza) spent nearly eight years behind bars after returning from exile to run for president. Though pardoned by President Paul Kagame in 2018, she was once again arrested in 2025 and detained on “conspiring to incite public disorder,” “undermining the authority of the government,” and other charges.
In a letter from prison, Victoire writes, “The days are lonely and can sometimes feel hopeless in prison, but there are occasional bright spots. Earlier this year, my son spoke about my imprisonment at the Oslo Freedom Forum and I heard that posters with my photo had been placed at bus stops throughout the city. It makes me proud to think of my children, standing up for freedom and justice … I hope they understand why I feel called to do this work, even though it keeps us apart.”
Victoire now faces a trial in which the prosecutor seeks a life sentence. HRF calls on the Rwandan regime to release Victoire and end its relentless persecution of opposition figures and government critics, both inside and outside the country. As Victoire writes, “I believe in a better future for Rwanda, but it cannot be built while independent voices are silenced.”

Behind every political prisoner is a human story—a family separated, a voice silenced, a courageous life interrupted.
On Friday, 10/30, we will gather at the Lincoln Memorial to speak their names, honor their courage, and stand with those fighting for their freedom.
Join us at 5 PM.

No amount of sports sponsorship can erase the repression and human rights abuses committed by #Kagame’s regime.
The @RwandaGov cannot continue to hide behind the global appeal of sports.
The @NBA, @AVFCOfficial, @Atleti and @F1 must confront their role in helping Kagame’s government launder its international image.

I have been to Kigali and you see a military officer fully armed, stationed strategically within every 10 meters. That country is not peaceful, it's fearful.

When you are in Rwanda, you can feel an atmosphere of war. Heavily armed soldiers are everywhere, on every street corner. That is not what peace looks like; it is what fear looks like. 🇷🇼 #FreeRwanda from #Kagame

The gruesome way Robert Kabera died is not haphazard. Joining the Rwandan Patriotic Front involves an oath- an oath Kabera as ex-military will have taken - which calls for anyone betraying the cause to be crucified, hanged or have their head separated from their body. 1/3
Heartbreaking and horrifying. Another Rwandan dissident, Robert Kabera, was found beheaded in Uganda.
@RamsNFL why accept “Visit Rwanda” sponsorship from a regime with a documented record of killings and transnational repression?

Deeply disturbing reports: Sergeant Major Robert Kabera has been murdered in Kamengo, Uganda. He spent the night at the property, his body was found the next morning, decapitated, the head missing.
Sergeant Robert was an outspoken critic of Kagame's regime, and every indication so far points to Kigali. This bears the hallmarks of yet another extrajudicial killing in a long pattern of transnational repression.

#F1 now reeks of the blood of innocent Rwandan and Congolese civilians killed amid #Kagame’s actions. Women are raped, children die in #DRC while in 🇷🇼 critics are still killed or arrested on false charges. #SouthAfrica would have been a better choice for the African Grand Prix.
Replying to @F1Yapathon
@F1Yapathon, Thanks mate for speaking up for Rwandans. We can’t freely make these videos while living in #Rwanda because we could be killed within the next hour💔 #F1 now reeks of blood and the bodies of innocent people #drc for choosing to associate itself with #kagame's regime.

I started visiting Rwanda around 2010, when you still needed a visa to travel to Rwanda.
In this picture is sports, youth and culture minister Joe Habineza, with me. He died in 2021. We would hang out whenever I was in Rwanda. Went around the city of Kigali, where people recognised him and praised him.
Mr. Habineza was Rwanda’s Ambassador to Nigeria then and he would bring visa sticker to the Lagos airport from Abuja and put it on my passport and we would fly to Kigali.
I volunteered at Kwetu Institute to teach. That’s a film school owned by Eric Kabera.
This is where it gets interesting. I lost my luggage on RwandAir. After trying to reach Yvonne Makolo, its CEO and she told me they would not do anything, I came to Twitter to call them out.
On my next trip to Rwanda, 8 men in suit came to my hotel on the day I was supposed to leave and took me in and kept me in prison for 2 weeks…
Until there was an intervention from people Kagame listened to, like President Obasanjo…
When he imprisoned Paul Rusesabagina, I had to work with his family to reach out to those prominent Africans who started talking to him.
So, when you go to Rwanda for Formula 1 in 2030, which is years away, behave well.

Africa's second great experiment with liberal democracy is failing, says @Winnie_Byanyima. "Our democratic project is being hollowed out and it's structural. A small elite controls the state and institutions. Elections take place but power never moves."

WLC calls for transparency, independent human rights scrutiny, and accountability.
