unfortunately one major factor is that cars have grown 3x in size and have worse visibility than a literal tank
apologies if this is super naive but just asking bc im curious. is there anything different about raising a kid now in 2026 versus in the 80s that warrants them needing more supervision? like when my dad was like 8 he'd wander around the city alone most of the time. i'm asking bc when i have kids, i dont want to have to supervise them 24/7. i feel like that's very demanding on parents. why cant independent play be more of then norm? is it a cultural thing? or is the world more dangerous now than it used to be?

I call this the diva's paradox
if you tell your manager you have complete conviction in an idea, and they tell you "no," and your response is anything OTHER than leaving the company to do it yourself, you are signaling to them that you don't actually have conviction in the idea. if you're not willing to bet your career on the idea, why should they?
but then if you DO quit to pursue the idea yourself, your manager will get the message that they should take the idea seriously, but it's too late, you've already quit
so you need a way to credibly signal that you have a burn-it-all-down level of conviction in your idea without actually quitting

Dude at this NWDC coffee shop has several stickers on his laptop that may as well be the official seal of a certain 3 letter agency. Why would you do that in this city. That’s like wearing a band t-shirt to the concert
idk how widespread this is, but back when I was hiring for a pretty basic data analytics/engineering role that really just required some fluency with Python and SQL, HR would tell me all the time with a straight face they just couldn't find any marginally qualified resumes for me to even look at. And when I got frustrated and asked to see some resumes they thought "weren't qualified" it became clear there was a huge disconnect
I don't actually blame them for this; it's really hard to understand what makes a resume "qualified" for a job you've never done and don't understand. And they were doing the first pass at management's request, because no one wants to spend time out of their day reviewing a stack of resumes that include a lot of people who genuinely aren't qualified at all. But I think you or your team kinda have to put in the grunt work if you want to hire good people.
