The United States Marine Corps originally rejected Ronald Shurer when he tried to enlist because of a medical condition, so he refused to quit, joined the U.S. Army, and earned the Green Beret as a Special Forces combat medic. On April 6, 2008, in Afghanistan's Shok Valley, his team was ambushed by machine guns and sniper fire from the top of a sheer sixty-foot rock cliff. Within minutes, an enemy bullet slammed straight into Shurer's helmet and another ripped through a teammate's arm. Four critically wounded Americans were pinned down on a high rock ledge where medical helicopters could not land because rocket-propelled grenades were echoing off the narrow canyon walls. Instead of taking cover at the bottom, Shurer climbed straight up the vertical cliff face through a hailstorm of bullets to reach his bleeding brothers.
