Sympathizing with the Grinch
Once upon a bright morning, not long after Yule,
Lived a dad who was cheerful, by all accounts cool.
In his late 30s prime, full of laughter and cheer,
He adored all the magic that came once a year.
The stockings were hung, now slouched and askew,
The wrappings were shredded, the tape tubes in view.
And this dad, full of glee, with a laugh and a cheer,
Admired the wild mess of this Holy time of year.
“Oh, the joy! Oh, the fun! Look at all of these toys!
A magical Christmas for my girls and my boys!”
He chuckled and sipped coffee in his coziest socks
Till he stepped on a Lego,
Those cruel tiny blocks.
The chaos kept growing, the noise reached a roar,
With toy drums and trumpets and dolls on the floor.
“Daddy! Come play!” cried the voices so sweet,
But his patience was thinning, as were the holiday treats.
Markers on walls, glue spilled on his chair,
How - its a manger scene, did frosting get there?
And that dad who’d been jolly, so merry, so kind,
Felt a strange sort of grumble creep into his mind.
“Why the noise? Why the mess? Why the jingles and clatter?
Do they not see my sanity’s starting to shatter?”
His face turned a greenish, distinct kind of hue,
His heart shrank a size, maybe one, maybe two.
With his bathrobe askew and his hair all a-fray,
He muttered and mumbled, “I’ll throw it all away!”
“I get it now, Grinch! You aren’t so bad—
You just needed some quiet, … same here,” sighed the dad.
Yet, just as he scowled, from the corner he spied,
A small little child, with a smile wide.
“Daddy, come here! You’re my favorite of all!”
And the boy tugged at his sleeve with a voice soft and small.
Then his Grinch heart melted, his scowl took a shift,
He sat in the rubble, grandparents gifts.
And there, in the madness, his heart slowly grew,
For love outweighed chaos, as he already knew.
So that dad learned a lesson (with coffee in hand):
Even mess has its magic—it’s life’s crazy strand.
And though he’ll still grumble when toys hit his toes,
He knows that these moments are the joy life bestows.
