After 11 days, the #rhodesfires #rhodeswildfires are under control and mostly extinguished thanks to the heroic efforts of local villagers and foreign fire crews. Here’s to a much better tourist season! #faliraki #lindos #rhodes

#Rhodes #rhodesfires #rhodeswildfires getting international attention in Canada, as fires advance to Vati over night.
As multiple heat waves grip large swaths of the globe, here are some reports from some of the front lines of that battle, including in Canada.

Time to pressure @govgr @PrimeministerGR @USEmbassyAthens to help the people of #rhodesgreece as uncontrolled fires redirect toward more heavily populated resort areas & destroy local villages. This is not the time for a holiday #rhodesfire #rhodeswildfire #rhodesfire @RedCross
#rhodeswildfire #rhodesgreece Still no governmental relief on day 8 of uncontrolled fires. Now a shortage of bottled water for tourists & locals. Deer population has been decimated. Do not travel to Rhodes for a holiday. #faliraki #lindos #rhodes @RedCross @WorldWildlifeF
#rhodeswildfire #rhodesgreece Armed security from #Athens are turning away local villagers & water trucks, preventing them from saving homes & villages. Still no State of Emergency declared (municipal or national) @CanadaGreece @kmitsotakis @USEmbassyAthens @RedCross

Spend more time outdoors, mask up, and protect each other, folks.
This is an X-ray of a person in their early 30s who is perfectly healthy. They have mild #omicron and severe bacterial pneumonia. (Yellow square). My ICU is full of these cases. Omicron suppresses immunity making people susceptible to severe disease. This makes everyone comorbid.

right after you graduate from school you should get to go on a silent reading retreat where you rediscover the joys of reading for pleasure
Finished my first co-authored book chapter late last night. Celebrating with tea, a new novel, and nama chocolates 🥰
I finished my dissertation two weeks ago. People ask how it feels…it feels…the same. I am still teaching, TAing, editing an overdue book chapter, drafting an article, so, so behind on all my tasks in this burning world. It is a very strange state to be in.
Remarkable how many people are now “experts” in Eastern European history and relations. Even with a degree in Ukrainian folklore, language, and culture, I am at a loss for words, as I sit here, safe, fed, warm. #standwithukraine
Finishing a dissertation feels futile in the face of everything happening in the world. I struggle to reconcile the work with ongoing societal collapse (public health misinformation + privatization, collapsing job market, inflation, global conflicts). What a strange time.

people really say “I did my own research” like they’re Gandalf poring over ancient scrolls in Minas Tirith and not just repeating something they read on facebook
This is a lovely reminder for today.
