Ages ago I was putting together a list of recommended films for my TY class.
I never got around to typing the list up so I'm putting it together on a thread.
All fiction, no documentaries (I haven't seen enough of them).
And I'm aware of the lack of diversity.
I'm working on that

The Diplomat is high nonsense, but always fun. This season was a bit more of a trudge than previous ones yet the ending was all the more satisfying because of that.
Didn't he say something to Tommy Tirenan about this kind of casting?
And Tiernan replied with something like, "you say that now..."
And, of course, this could be nonsense.

"One day, maybe everyone will want to go bald."
Hmmm.
Not too subtle there lads.
Should I feel shame at being bald?
The people at Sons think so.

OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

The two stars and director of the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People have signed a major open letter supporting the author.
“Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public,” the letter states.

I do honestly think this is a falling standards of literacy thing.
In that these people do not understand that different media have different languages, a written word is not the same a visual image and so on.
It does feel like it’s getting worse.
I have a yearly conversation with classes about why I don't show the film version of the novel/play we're reading. They quickly get that films are a different artform (by a different artist) with unique strengths and limitations. I don't get how adults don't get this. #EdChatIE
Agree 100%
I would add that showing a film adaptation, as part of your study of a novel, devalues both the film and the novel.

Following the criteria they've suggested would likely result in terrible, unwatchable films.

I know this isn’t really the point, but the (largely American, I think) hyping of 12 Angry Men as among the five or 10 best films of all time continues to baffle me. (See also the IMDb 250). It’s definitely a good film, but nowhere near *that* good. Barely top 10 of 1957.
The live action Paw Patrol:Mission Just About Possible is a standard entry in the "made for streaming action movie" genre.
Keep expectations low.
And then lower them.
Oh, sorry, it's called Matchbox The Movie.

Irish teacher in Oz on the strikes and the comparison of teaching/living here and there. She's probably never coming back, why would she?
I like Greta Gerwig's films.
Loved Barbie and Little Women, sat through Lady Bird without complaint, but I too am a little taken aback by the amount of CGI in the trailer.
CGI doesn't hold much wonder anymore, that's why the careful use of it in Barbie worked.
Still hopeful.
