WHY PRO CYCLING CONTRACTS SHOULD START ON NOVEMBER 1 It’s that time of the year again. We are seeing those strange scenes when riders who have already signed with new teams show up on the roads and at training camps riding their new bikes but still wearing their old team kits. Imagine a footballer wearing his former team’s shirt during the first training sessions with his new club. Everyone would find that bizarre. Yet, in cycling, this has been the reality for decades, all because of an illogical rule that requires riders to remain contractually tied to their old teams until December 31. By that point, however, they are already fully integrated into their new squads, riding new bikes, working with new coaches and representing new sponsors in practically every aspect except the jersey and helmet they wear. And I don’t see this as just a minor cosmetic issue. If cycling wants to grow as a sport and attract more money, confusing fans with mixed messages and different team identities is hardly the best way to do it. I see it in the comments a lot and many who don’t watch cycling every day are confused. The racing season is effectively over by late October. There is no real competitive reason to keep the old contracts running throughout November and December.
