The Cowboys have the best kickoff coverage team in the league at the moment, allowing just 19.3 yards per return, 2 yards better than second-best Carolina. I asked coordinator Nick Sorensen about the demeanor that unit plays with and how he reacts on the sideline.
It led to a lengthy, but good answer.
“I think we all love it. Even when I was a kid and I wasn't even allowed to play football, I loved watching kickoff. Obviously, it was old school, you were kicking from the 30, but I remember watching games with my pops and we would always pick a guy, ‘Who's going to make the tackle here?’ We'd always get to pick a dude that we thought was going to make it. And to me it was always so exciting and I'm glad that we still have kickoff. Obviously, I coach special teams, but just I think it's one of the coolest, purest parts of the game and it's violent in the right kind of ways. And I just love when we don't get solo tackles. To me that says a lot about the entire coverage unit and the want-to, finish and cap off and just swarm the ball.
“And that's what I think has been the coolest part is it's not just one guy making the play. It's usually a couple guys or if one guy gets doubled, the other guys are going to make it up. And that's been a cool part of the unit. They embrace it. They love it. And it's the first play of our defense. That's really the most important part. We want to have a better drive start at the end of the game on kickoff than our opponent. That's one of our goals, just like we want to have a better net punt than our opponent. Those are two of our main goals that we have each week because it's all about how we're going to win this game? We've talked about season ending, what puts you in top five. It's about how do we help us win the game? So for us, that's the first play of our defense and when those guys are flying around swarming, that energy is contagious.”
We got the only offense that really pinpoints on these super defense just move up the other TE and brown to we corps we be ready to roll
If you look at the hit teams half of the squad is not from in house, f these people and will does not make the final call all of his has I bet you that those bust were coaches pics especially defense
It’s not like playing madden oh boy
Those vultures sitting around hoping the cardinals punk asses beat us, if I am not mistaken that after they had been long road trips and travel.
Any team Flores goes to he will never get any calls, what credentials does Troy have that he should be GM, because he talks shit about players on Monday night, please he never won anything with out Mike he could not carry a team on his back, he was not a leader, Will has out in the work and years. That job is for family members anyway
To say they are not trying and are not serious organization is false. It’s easy to sit at home and make decisions. Like Stephen told you just don’t know.
Jerry Jones said this morning that the #Cowboys are unlikely to find help from outside the organization, but he would make a move if the right opportunity presented itself.
Now, let me make something CLEAR!
I’m not painting myself into a corner saying Dallas MUST go get DeForest Buckner. I’m talking about the collective responsibility of this front office to continue looking for ways to improve this football team!
Look at what’s happening around the league. The Seattle Seahawks just acquired Quenton Nelson, and now the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly exploring a move for DeForest Buckner. That’s potentially a counter move within their own division!
THAT’S MY POINT!
If you’re serious about being competitive, you cannot stop looking for ways to improve your roster just because you won a football game!
You can celebrate the victory AND continue evaluating talent. TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUE!
Some of y’all get in your feelings whenever I bring this up, but I’m speaking facts. And not one of y’all can outdebate me on the importance of continually improving your football team!
Winning one game doesn’t eliminate the responsibility to get BETTER! ☆
It’s not easy as you think it’s a lot going on behind closed doors I can’t say. I will say this they have no control it’s all laid out each season. I just think it’s not a good thing to always throw what others are doing. At the end of the day 49ers for great as they are they haven’t won and Seahawks has only 2 SB’s.
Replying to @cowboycomputer
Bringing up the 49ers or Seahawks isn’t taking shots at Dallas. It’s showing what other organizations are willing to do to remain competitive.
I don’t agree I have convos with Stephen I just don’t tell anyone they are trying to sign a player right now, but when you bring up another team to take shot at them, the people that cover never say look what the Cowboys did. People hold cowboys to higher standards, other teams don’t have the cloud the Cowboys have over them
To be fair, I don’t agree with everything President Trump does, but that doesn’t mean I have to leave the country. The same principle applies to the Dallas Cowboys!
I’ve been following this team since before Jerry Jones bought it, and I’ll still be here long after the Jones family is gone, whenever that day comes.
Pointing out flaws, questioning decisions, and holding leadership accountable doesn’t mean you hate the team. It means you care enough to want better!
Being a fan doesn’t mean you have to blindly agree with every decision the organization makes. You can celebrate the victories and still recognize the problems that need fixing.
My loyalty is to the Dallas Cowboys, not to whoever happens to own or run the franchise.
There’s a difference between supporting a team and settling for mediocrity. Two things can be true! ☆
I hate to be like this but maybe you should role you law nation into the 49ers or Seahawks. They are never gonna be what you want them to be in your eyes.
Let them have some joy life is hard on them
Christian Parker is so reluctant to be happy and take that game ball…
Which fair, he should be; but, if anything it tells me that he knows that still isn’t good enough. Which if anything is a good sign.
Schottenheimer doesn’t need to give him a participation game ball though… that’s just annoying to see.
Fuck Troy never liked him
#Cowboys Troy Aikman: “Eh, not really. Not really. And I don’t mean that as a negative… This is a beat-up Philadelphia team. To come in here and win tonight, I mean, let’s not get carried away.” 🏈🎙️
We need to continue to APPLY THE PRESSURE!!!
Run the ball to open up the passing game! Keep Dak Prescott between 23 and 28 passing attempts. When Dallas has a runner accumulate 90 or more rushing yards, Dak wins approximately 84% of those games!
The defense is still going to give up plenty of yards and big plays, but you HAVE to win the time of possession (TOP) and turnover battles!
You have to find ways to squeeze out victories while learning and improving along the way!
Remember, you have a SECOND-YEAR HEAD COACH in Brian Schottenheimer and a FIRST-YEAR DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR in Christian Parker.
Now, here’s something people need to understand about this defensive coaching staff!
Christian Parker is only 34 years old, yet he has the MOST NFL DEFENSIVE COACHING EXPERIENCE on the staff at eight years! I went through the defensive coaching staff, and everyone else has fewer years of experience than Parker!
Think about that! Your 34-year-old, first-year defensive coordinator is also your MOST EXPERIENCED defensive coach!
That’s not a knock on his age or ability. That’s about understanding the experience level of the people responsible for developing and leading this defense!
This team is still learning, growing, and figuring things out. But that doesn’t mean we stop holding them accountable!
THIS IS NOT HATE TALK! THIS IS REALITY!!!
Celebrate the victory, but don’t confuse ONE WIN with having everything figured out!
