Holmes was arrested shortly after the shooting, and was jailed without bail while awaiting trial. He had no known criminal background before the shooting occurred.
Before the shooting, Holmes booby-trapped his apartment with explosives, which were defused one day later by a bomb squad.
On August 26, 2015, he was ordered to serve 12 consecutive life sentences plus 3,318 years without parole after the jury spared Holmes the death penalty by a single vote.

Barack Obama actually compared President Trump’s White House to Saddam Hussein opening a Cheesecake Factory.
Imagine being a former president and thinking that’s a clever insult.
The Cheesecake Factory is a great American success story. Good food, hardworking employees, and millions of customers who love eating there.
Obama thought he was insulting Trump, but he managed to drag a popular American restaurant into his cheap political joke.
Americans are enjoying their cheesecake while Obama is still bitter about Trump.
What an embarrassment.

James Holmes chose the only nearby theater that banned guns.
When 7 theaters within 20 minutes of his apartment showed the same midnight Batman premiere in 2012, he picked the one with the no guns sign.
His notebook called it “isolated, proximate, large.”
Everyone who obeyed the sign was unarmed.
He bought his 4 guns legally and passed every background check. But fortunately, his 100 round drum jammed and likely saved lives.
Afterward, Colorado Democrats passed universal background checks and a 15 round magazine limit by one vote.
Neither would have stopped him.
