When Maj Gen AE Abubakar was transferred as GOC of 3 Division, Jos, to Maiduguri as the new Theatre Commander, I had serious misgivings about it and shared those concerns with friends. My central question was simple: what was the yardstick for such an appointment and posting? This is an officer who presided over a Plateau State where the killing of civilians had become routine, almost systemic, with little to show in terms of decisive intervention or accountability. He was in charge when Bokkos fell in December 2023 with over 200 people killed across over 20 villages simultaneously despite prior warnings. Since his assumption of duty in Maiduguri, a disturbing pattern has emerged. Boko Haram, a group widely described in official circles as largely decimated, has grown visibly bolder. Attacks on military formations and facilities across the Northeast have intensified. Senior officers and soldiers are being killed at a frequency and boldness that is unprecedented in recent memory. What exactly is the problem? At what point does the Nigerian military establishment begin to hold its commanders to account? How many more soldiers must be buried, how many more civilians must be mourned, before the concept of consequence catches up with demonstrable failure? This pattern of rewarding or reassigning officers who preside over avoidable tragedies, rather than questioning their command decisions, is not just a military problem. It is a national crisis, and the world is watching. Incompetence in uniform, when shielded by rank and institutional loyalty, does not stay contained. It bleeds.

The Northern Elites are scared They have not invested in the human capital enough to run a state police . Is it the Elite brats who are entitled to the wealth of others and public funds that will carry gun and secure one another ? Or the roaming kids they have refused to provide any sort of social net for that will harm you /vandalize at any slight rejection of their demands ? Or the already radicalized nomads who have fell in love with ransom? Do you know how many southern officers will leave Federal Service to work for their states knowing that they will never have to deal with nepotism that hinders career ? The Chicken, hen and all the birds have come home to roast The consequences are here and the outcome cannot be avoided
Southern Governors Draw Red Line: State Police or Nothing – Declare It Non-Negotiable for Nigeria’s Survival Governors from Nigeria's southern states convened in a high-stakes strategic meeting Wednesday, issuing a resounding call for the establishment of state police as an "non-negotiable" pillar of true federalism and grassroots security, amid a surge in kidnappings and violent extremism plaguing the region. Hosted by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun at Iperu Remo, the Southern Governors' Forum gathering drew key figures including Rivers State's Siminalayi Fubara, Abia State's Alex Otti, Ekiti's Biodun Oyebanji, Ebonyi’s Francis Nwifuru, Enugu’s Peter Mbah, Anambra’s Charles Soludo, and deputies from Osun, Edo, Oyo, and Cross River states. The session, shrouded in urgency, zeroed in on decentralizing Nigeria's centralized policing model to better tackle localized threats, from school abductions to rural banditry. In his opening address, Abiodun painted a stark picture of the nation's security landscape, warning that "recent mass abductions in schools, religious centres and rural communities across the country have shown that no region is immune to organised criminality or violent extremism." He lauded President Bola Tinubu's "exceptional leadership" in orchestrating swift rescues of kidnapped students but stressed the need for deeper reforms, declaring, “The creation of state police remains a non-negotiable component of our collective demand for true federalism and effective grassroots security.” Discussions delved into forging an integrated security blueprint, emphasizing intelligence-sharing, early-warning systems, and safeguards for schools, farmlands, borders, and critical infrastructure. The governors spotlighted the pivotal role of traditional rulers as "links to the grassroots," urging closer ties between local communities, security forces, and hereditary leaders to foster proactive defenses. By meeting's end, the forum forged a unified resolution: State police must be prioritized to create a "policing system closer to the people, more responsive to local realities, and better equipped to address the rapidly evolving threats we face." They pledged to champion this agenda nationally, while committing to collaborative frameworks that weave in community vigilance and corridor surveillance for a "peaceful and prosperous southern region." The gathering comes as Nigeria grapples with escalating insecurity, with southern states reporting a spike in incidents that have strained federal resources. Analysts view the governors' synchronized push as a potential game-changer in constitutional debates, though opposition from northern counterparts on decentralization remains a hurdle. No timeline was set for follow-up actions, but sources indicate the forum plans to lobby the National Assembly imminently.

Call For Justice: One Woman’s Battle Against Alleged Fraud, Police Harassment, Violence In Lagos October 27, 2025, 8:46 am A Lagos-based woman, Mary James, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged Police harassment, extortion and unlawful arrest and detention. The petition, filed by counsel, Savn Daniel (Head of Practice and Litigation), Otung, Okoho & Co. (Edodiong Chambers) was dated October 22, 2025, and acknowledged receipt on October 23, as per the copy sighted by our correspondent. When Mary James walked into a Lagos hospital on the night of October 19, 2025, she was bleeding, bruised, and barely conscious. Hours earlier, she had been beaten by men she believed were loyal to a man she once called a friend, a man she now accuses of fraud, intimidation, and conspiracy. For Mary, a soft-spoken property agent and caregiver to her ailing husband, the assault was not an isolated incident. It was the culmination of two years of relentless harassment, a spiral of deceit, abuse, and institutional betrayal that had shaken her faith in justice. “I have been beaten nearly to death, detained on false charges, and humiliated simply because I demanded what was rightfully ours,” she said from her hospital bed. “We are not criminals. We only bought a property.” Her voice trembles as she recounts the nightmare. What began as a straightforward real estate deal in 2023 has morphed into a web of forgery, police corruption, sexual coercion, and alleged cover-up of a suspicious death It began with a property at No. 26 Tolu Road, Apapa. Mary’s husband bought the house from Prince Kehinde Sulaimon Muritala Ojora, who had earlier purchased it through an intermediary, Kenneth Arhagba, a familiar face in the local real estate circle and acquaintance of the original owners, the Osazuwa family. According to Mary, Kenneth seemed trustworthy, until he wasn’t. Months later, he returned claiming Ojora was in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and urgently needed funds for bail. He persuaded the couple to “temporarily” buy back the property in a distress sale, promising to regularise ownership when Ojora was released. It was all a lie. Kenneth had forged a Contract of Sale in the name of his now late brother, Onoriode Kingsley Arhagba, tricking Mary into signing as a witness under false pretences. When Ojora regained his freedom, Kenneth blocked all contact between them. “He kept giving excuses and delays,” Mary said. “By the time we realised, the document was fake and his brother’s name was illegally inserted.” ... Instead of taking the dispute to court, Kenneth weaponised his connection within the police. Enter Inspector Geoffrey Akwo, an officer attached to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon. Mary alleges Akwo shielded Kenneth from investigation while targeting her family. “He called us criminals, demanded sex from me, and said if I didn’t give in, he’d make sure we died in detention,” she said. Akwo’s alleged interference derailed police inquiries that had initially cleared Mary and her husband at Zone 2 Police Command, where investigators had confirmed the authenticity of their transactions. The harassment intensified in May 2025, when Akwo and his team reportedly abducted one Abayomi Tope Eletu — a friend of the couple — and detained him for two weeks, extracting ₦500,000 before coercing him to implicate Mary under duress. In a grim twist, Kenneth’s brother, whose name was purportedly on the property owner contract, died mysteriously outside Ajeromi Police Station, Ajegunle. Eyewitnesses say he collapsed during a meeting aimed at reconciliation between see more at: newnigeriannewspapers.ng/cal… @PoliceNG_CRU @PoliceNG @BenHundeyin @FCT_PoliceNG @NGRSenate @officialABAT @NGRPresident @OfficialDSSNG @Princemoye1 @hrw @UNICEF @oluremisonaiya @RemiTinubu @firstladyship @seunokin @channelstv @AIT_Online @WomenAffairs200 @FMWA_ng @wapalagos
