New US sanctions on #Rwanda officials & entities are reminder of how EU lags behind in response to eastern #DRCongo conflict.
#EU has role to play. It should revive use of sanctions, put justice at center of peace efforts & act to protect civilians.

Expelling Rwanda from AGOA should not be mistaken for punishing ordinary Rwandans. As in Uganda, the greatest beneficiaries of these arrangements are often brutal authoritarian rulers and their inner circles—not ordinary citizens. The people suffer while the ruling elite and their cronies cash in.

It is regrettable that South African policies led to the termination of AGOA for South Africa. This was a predictable and preventable outcome resulting from the rejection by South Africa's government of real concerns raised by the U.S. Government. I remain hopeful that we can find a path forward to address our larger bilateral concerns, but the South African government must understand the gravity of the situation. We know that if America succeeds, so too will South Africa. This is the partnership I will continue to pursue as expeditiously as possible.

Tanzania and Angola have reached an agreement to connect their railway networks through Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, creating a transportation corridor linking Africa’s Atlantic and Indian Ocean coasts. This ambitious initiative could reduce transportation costs and expand access to international markets. This agreement represents an important step toward stronger economic ties between African nations. I encourage the United States and other international partners to support infrastructure investments that strengthen trade and create lasting economic opportunities across Africa.

🇺🇸🇷🇼🇨🇩 Weeks after Tim Kennedy was shot three times in eastern Congo... Washington sanctioned the army he was fighting
Treasury hit Rwanda’s Ministry of Defense for deploying thousands of troops alongside the M23 rebels in North and South Kivu, and Zigama Credit and Savings Society for moving the money that buys their weapons and launders the gold that comes out of rebel-held mines into Rwanda.
That is the same war Erik Prince’s contractors are in on the Congolese side, under a contract to secure and tax the mining areas Washington wants American companies in, and the September ambush that wounded Kennedy and killed a former New Zealand commando happened on one of those mining-revenue operations.
The sanctions put the US government where Prince already was: on Tshisekedi’s side against Kigali, which was Washington’s Africa partner until the minerals deal made Congo worth more.
Rwanda now has a choice between pulling its troops out of the Kivus or watching its defense ministry get cut off from dollars, and M23 has to decide whether to keep fighting with its bank frozen.
