The start of botanical nomenclature and we're still publishing today. Names published by Linnaeus are searchable in IPNI beta.ipni.org/a/12653-1 along with a link to @BioDivLibrary to see the actual page
#Onthisday in 1753 ‘Species Plantarum’ by Carl Linnaeus was published. The work consistently applies the binomial nomenclature to plants.

A hortus siccus? #Botany and #horticulture go back a very long way. This is just part of a fantastic display put on by Gen Herb curator Jacek today for a tour looking at the relationship between gardening and taxonomic botany from the late 1600s to today.

Turns out there is a #Darwin quote for every occasion: ‘What a pity there cannot be 2 sets of men in our Government, one to do all the miserable squabbling & the other to attend to the real interests of the country.’ Charles Darwin writing to Thomas Henry Farrer, 23 October 1879

"The first purpose of a garden is to be a place of quiet beauty such as will give delight to the eye and refreshment to the mind" said Gertrude Jekyll. It's as true today as it was then. #BlueMonday

V nice to be back @CUBotanicGarden for a few days finishing up. This lovely lonely only-thing-in-flower Mandragora autumnalis is now stranded in the newly-cut Scroph bed and needs moving! P'raps get #solanaceae specialist @SandyKnapp up to do it! Or maybe Prof Sprout @MMargolyes
