“Happy is the man, I thought, who, before dying, has the good fortune to sail the Aegean sea.”
– Nikos Kazantzakis, Zorba the Greek
A 2nd–3rd century grave stele from Patras depicting the gladiator Trypheros, who is armed as a secutor. His son Alexandros, who erected the monument, stands to his right. The wreaths to his left mark his victories, while an epigram below honors both father and son.
i still can’t get over the fact that the faculty of architecture in torino is housed in the historic castello di valentino

We all got amazed when during the coronation ceremony of king Charles III we heard Psalm 71 being chanted in Greek in full Rhomaic majesty...But did you know that a distant predecessor of Carles, Queen Elizabeth I composed her own Greek Prayer in ca. 1570?.
Not a bad job indeed, Elizabeth:

Built by the Fascist regime in Rome’s EUR district for the 1940 Esposizione Universale Roma, the “Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana” is the pinnacle of Rationalist and fascist architecture, featuring a neoclassical design inspired by the Colosseum.
Pictured here is engraving that depicts a flower market in the center of Athens. The artwork was published in 1877 by the Illustrated London News.
I am going to Torino this October so if you guys have some suggestions on what to see or visit that would really help.
the appointments for a new id were full in athens so i had to go to an island to book one. at least i’m enjoying the last bits of summer 🤷🏻♂️
Pictured here is a Roman mosaic depicting two birds, from the Christian Basilica of Jovian at Palaiopolis in Corfu. Dated to approximately the 5th–6th century CE, the mosaics from Palaiopolis constitute rare surviving examples of mosaic art from this period on the island.

The ancient Greek lyric poet Pindar once declared that "hopes are but the dreams of those awake" for like a dream, a man's hope offers a dual illusive gift: a comfort yet fleetingly insubstantial.

what the church of saints sergius & bacchus (now the little hagia sophia mosque) in istanbul would’ve looked like if it was left as a byzantine church.
emperor justinian I commissioned it & it was operating as a church for nearly 1,000 years.
The Byzantine Museum of Corfu, housed in the Church of Panagia Antivouniotissa is truly a hidden gem. The institution preserves an important corpus of post-Byzantine icons. The church itself, dating to the 15th century is an exquisite example of local ecclesiastical architecture.
