A lot of PBR looks fake because roughness is such a poor estimation map for specular response. A microfaceted surface will offset the brightest converge, not mute it. We should be using better normalmaps and discard the concept of roughness entirely.

Soon after I released FPOM for unreal a few weeks ago I started getting questions about IHP, claiming it was better and faster. Without any benchmarks to show for, just words using FPOM as an example of "bad". 😔 So I decided to package a benchmark with all the different POMs so people can see and test for themself! Included IHP, FPOM, RCSM (Gold standard to beat tbh), UE5 POM and Nanite Displacement! reddit.com/r/UnrealEngine5/c… #gamedev #ue5 #dramatuesday

If you want to make it in game dev and don't have prior connections, the best way to stand out while getting to exercise is to build a significant mod for a game with a small team of high trust volunteers

Colors in 3D rendering are built on a false premise. Albedos necessarily assume some default luminosity value that can't ever be accurate to the actual lighting. Color should instead be stored as some sort of value that informs the renderer how the surface absorbs the different..

wavelengths when it's being lit by the scene lights. Now you don't have to do a heap of color correction trickery to get something approximately correct looking.

Gamers are right to be performance-conscious and care about rendering efficiency. They would do well to install software like RenderDoc and actually analyze how the frame budget is spent instead of foolishly ripping 3D assets for ridicule. Those are small parts of a big whole.

ArtStation and FlippedNormals marketplaces and most every virtual store is unusable garbage nowadays because of the AI slop on display. No filtering of AI or AI spam creators. Everyone's loss, really!

I have no followers so this will likely go into the void, but the issue with Ciri in the Witcher 4 trailer is not her face, it's the size of her face compared to the size of her skull. These kinds of proportions are not impossible, but they're rare. Quick edit to illustrate:

While there are real people with this kind of phenotype, it's not the most attractive, and it doesn't match past depictions of Ciri. It reminds me of my old art. I used to always make the faces too big, and it took a lot of training to get out of the habit.
