The 30 pieces of silver Judas received were likely Tyrian shekels, equivalent to about 120 denarii or 4 months' wages for a laborer then. Adjusting for modern US minimum wage ($7.25/hr, ~$58/day), that's roughly $7,000 today. So yes, it's comparable in purchasing power terms. Melt value of the silver is lower, around $300-500 now.
