"Milwaukee’s first socialist mayor, Emil Seidel, recalled that in their party’s parades, every band in the city marched, and “everybody who had a horn played.” The socialists held carnivals regularly, often drawing over 10,000 people."

Very cool to be quoted in the @newyorker on data centers, thank you @dankaufman70 for letting me rant about brownfields and NDAs and metonymy.
As A.I. becomes increasingly unpopular among voters, the politics of data centers are scrambling political lines across the country. “I’ve never seen engagement like this on any normal development issue,” a county supervisor in Southern Wisconsin said, about his constituents’ response to the planned construction of a data center. “People don’t like that they didn’t have a vote on whether social media could take over our society. And now people see A.I. getting ready to take things over and potentially upset lives, upset society, upset jobs, and they want the ability to have a say in that.” Read about the impact data centers are having in elections across the country—and especially in the Wisconsin governor’s race: newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…

I have a new piece in @NewYorker about the Wisconsin governor's race and growing movement against A.I. data centers. Deepest thanks to all the people who shared their insights with me and to the stellar editorial staff at the magazine.

The time Dolly Parton and Kermit jammed to Sly and the Family Stone.
This is always how I will remember her.
With the Wisconsin governor’s race heating up it seems like a particularly good moment to pick up a copy of THE FALL OF WISCONSIN and brush up on the state’s fascinating, intense, and vibrant political history—a history that is resonating so fiercely today. (@wwnorton)
Happy Earth Day! Here's an excerpt from THE FALL OF WISCONSIN (@wwnorton) on Earth Day's founder, Senator Gaylord Nelson.
Deeply sadded to hear of the death of Dan Bice, a tenacious reporter and Wisconsin institution. In 2018, he came to Boswell's for my book event. We talked for only a few minutes but his low-key charm and friendliness made a deep impression. Rest in peace. jsonline.com/story/news/obit…

Yes, it’s famous for its quirky politics & Obama margins, but it’s also some of the prettiest land in the midwest. Blood pressure drops 10 points when there.
