Michael Halen from Bloomberg Intelligence on AB 1228, which requires $20/hr min wage for fast food workers: “It is clearly good and important to take care of fast food workers, but you’re also hurting many more low income consumers who will now be paying higher menu prices.” #RLC
Jim Bitticks, Pres & COO @Dave’s Hot Chicken pointed out that a potential positive from AB 1228 could be a reduction in staff turnover, which in and of itself could improve store-level sales and profits. #RLC #daveshotchicken
SG Ellison from Diversified Restaurant Group reinforced that menu price alone won’t be the solution. It really is a combination of levers, which “requires really good leaders at the store level” to make it happen. Our industry is up to the task. We always have been. #RLC
Operators on the panel recognizes that mitigating increase wages by menu price increases aren’t the only solution. Many mentioned technologies like kiosks and mobile pay, as well as looking for efficiencies elsewhere up and down the P&L.
Kerri Harper-Howie, 20-unit McDonald’s franchisee in CA: “We can’t drive sales and guest counts unless we have employees in our restaurants that feel secure, so that’s a real priority for us.”
According to Bloomberg Intelligence modeling of various impacted CA chains, assuming QSRs traffic remains flat (which Halen recognized is a very tall order) a price increase of 7% would be needed to fully cover the wage increase.
From Martha Stewart
Entrepreneur, Icon, Restaurateur (The Bedford in Vegas) and this afternoon’s Keynote Speaker:
“Restaurants are some of the hardest but most fabulous businesses on earth” Amen Martha. Amen. #RLC #marthastewart
Dave Harris, CIO Shake Shack, on unified commerce: “With changes in guest behaviors brought on by the pandemic…things like ordering ahead, pick up how you want, etc have added complexity. Making sure there is a consistent experience across all channels is very important.” #RLC
