The Tripitaka Koreana - carved on 81258 woodblocks in the 13th century - is the most successful large data transfer over time yet achieved by humankind. 52 million characters of information, transmitted over nearly 8 centuries with zero data loss - an unequalled achievement. 1/

The failure of the UK state - and it is a failure of the state - to provide good geolocation services to the emergency services is a) annoying and b) harmful to the emergency services and people who rely on them

"Running a successful open source project is just Good Will Hunting in reverse, where you start out as a respected genius and end up being a janitor who gets into fights."
Quote attributed to @cra, and I don't think I've ever seen anything more true posted.

i have been playing around and experimenting with histograms and quantile sketches
a common theme is some kind of logarithmic bucketing, so the sketch can store a wide range of values with reasonable relative precision, e.g. 1%
i like the look of this UDDSketch algorithm from @rebeljam et al.
github.com/cafaro/UDDSketch
arxiv.org/abs/2004.08604
similar to datadog’s quantile estimation algorithm, but with bucket collapsing that assumes less about the statistical distribution

Edge cases are actually general cases. When your system has an edge case, it means that you were dealing with a special case of the problem all this time, and now you have to deal with a more general case. Unfortunately general cases suck, which is why edge cases are frustrating

#OnlineSafetyBill child safety filters being misused for the suppression of political speech.
Who would ever have thought that we would be seeing that?
Oh, wait, that would be everybody who understands the internet.
Stuart is not wrong! There is some limited blocking being applied to the HTTP version of @PennyMordaunt's election website, which will stop people accessing it when they simply type "pm4pm.com" into a web browser on those ISPs.

Our govt wants the railways to modernise (great 👌), they want them to be more efficient (sounds good!), but they want them to run without taxpayer subsidy... why? What's the logic for *public* transport being a profit driven venture? 🤨 1/4

Because most US outlets are 10A at 110V, the power of their electric kettles is way under half of a normal UK kettle.
As a result, the average British person in the US, drinking an average amount of tea, wastes over 6 more hours each week waiting for the kettle to boil.

If you rank every major software innovation (OOP, containers, version control, deep learning, consensus algorithms, asymmetric encryption, whatever...) by the value it created, the relational database would come out at the top and it's not even close

Back then I made the prediction, that eventually Wayland and its ecosystem will start to look more and more like X11, but with a less well defined API and ABI, lots of ad-hoc kludges and duck tape. Now some over 12 years later: Yep!

Love debugging a device that I made with a device that I made. Pycorder × Open Book, the former dumping info on a hard fault in the book’s pagination subroutine.

These conversations are signs of the development of a sub-community within the software community that is aware of structural design (as distinguished from aesthetic design) as an important discipline unto itself. Aside from the field of Architecture, I think this is rare.
