Everyone who keeps crying "coup" should read this carefully. The President has refused to accept the oaths of validly appointed judges on the CT because that would remove the PiS majority on that body. That is the only "coup" here - the President refusing to accept the authority of the Sejm. Please, for the love of all that's good, stop spouting Russian bot propaganda. Read the actual constitutional documents. Understand what has actually happened, not what is alleged. Think. Stop just assuming your side is automatically right and anyone pro-EU is automatically wrong (and I say that as an ardent Brexiteer). This is an ongoing constitutional issue in Poland, clarifying the limits of the Government and the President's respective powers. Is Tusk an angel who can do nothing wrong? Of course not. Is he in the right here? Very probably.
🇵🇱 Worth mentioning: On 10 October 2026, the Venice Commission adopted an opinion on the powers of the Polish President regarding the swearing-in of Constitutional Tribunal judges and other judicial appointments. The Venice Commission (officially the European Commission for Democracy through Law) is an advisory body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts in constitutional law. Established in 1990 following the fall of the Berlin Wall, it assists countries in strengthening democratic institutions, constitutional safeguards and the rule of law. What did the Commission say about Poland? In its opinion (CDL-AD(2026)031), the Commission concluded that the Polish Constitution grants the Sejm the authority to elect Constitutional Tribunal judges, while the President has no constitutional power to approve, reject or veto those elected judges. The Commission emphasised several key points: ▪️ The President must receive the judges’ oaths without undue delay. The oath is primarily ceremonial and cannot be used to review the legality of the Sejm’s election or question the qualifications of judges. ▪️ The President cannot indefinitely block judges from taking office. The Commission acknowledged that postponement may be justified only in exceptional, objective and unambiguous circumstances, and only for the time strictly necessary. It cannot result in the paralysis of the Constitutional Tribunal. ▪️ An alternative oath-taking procedure is constitutionally justified. Where the President unjustifiably refuses to administer the oath, the Commission considers it permissible for judges to assume office without his physical participation, provided the oath is properly completed, verified, addressed and formally transmitted to the President. ▪️ Judges should be able to begin performing their duties. Once the oath has been validly completed through this alternative procedure, judges should be allowed to assume judicial functions and have cases assigned to them. ▪️ Disputes over elections must be resolved through proper legal procedures. The President cannot unilaterally decide the legality of the Sejm’s election or use such doubts to obstruct the process. ▪️ The Commission also addressed appointments to other courts. Unlike Constitutional Tribunal judges, ordinary judges are appointed by the President under Article 179 of the Constitution. However, the Commission called for safeguards against arbitrary refusals, including effective access to judicial review. The Commission’s central conclusion: The President’s role in receiving the oath cannot be interpreted in a way that undermines the Sejm’s constitutional power to elect judges or obstructs the functioning of the Constitutional Tribunal.

Except the enormous difference that, unlike SCOTUS, the parliament gets to say who is on the Constitutional Tribunal. So not like this at all, really.

The situation in Poland is much simpler than all the talk of a “coup” suggests. PiS, Jarosław Kaczyński’s party, which backed current President Karol Nawrocki, refused to recognise three lawfully elected Constitutional Tribunal judges back in 2015, together with then-President Andrzej Duda. Those judges were Roman Hauser, Andrzej Jakubecki and Krzysztof Ślebzak. PiS installed its own picks in their seats: Henryk Cioch, Lech Morawski and Mariusz Muszyński. Even after the Tribunal confirmed that the original three had been lawfully elected, PiS and Duda refused to respect its ruling. They put their own political interests above the court’s decision. Yes, the previous PO–PSL coalition had also broken the rules by electing two additional judges before it was entitled to: Bronisław Sitek and Andrzej Sokala. But when the Tribunal ruled against those appointments, the coalition accepted the decision. Borys Budka even apologised on behalf of PO. PiS never complied with the ruling concerning the three lawfully elected judges. That difference matters. One side accepted an unfavourable ruling. The other refused to obey it. The court’s membership changed over the years. Cioch and Morawski died in 2017 and were replaced by Jarosław Wyrembak and Justyn Piskorski. Muszyński’s nine-year term ended in December 2024. Other judges’ terms ended too. Seats became vacant, and new judges needed to be elected. Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal judges are elected by the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, for nine-year terms. Donald Tusk’s governing coalition currently holds a majority there. That majority has the constitutional right to elect judges to fill those vacancies. PiS losing its parliamentary majority did not give it the right to block that process indefinitely. The Sejm elected eight new judges. President Nawrocki accepted the oaths of three: Magdalena Bentkowska, Dariusz Szostek and Sławomir Patyra. But he refused to accept the oaths of the other five: Krystian Markiewicz, Maciej Taborowski, Marcin Dziurda, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska and Maciej Berek. They eventually took their oaths without him present, formally addressing them to the president. The oath is required by law. But it does not give the president a personal veto over parliament’s choice of judges. He is required to accept their oaths. The Tribunal itself ruled on this back in 2015. In October 2026, the Venice Commission backed that interpretation and supported allowing judges to take their oaths without the president physically present if he blocks the process, provided the necessary formalities are followed. Yet the leadership of the very same Tribunal where PiS had unlawfully installed its own judges refused to let the new judges do their jobs. The court’s president, Bogdan Święczkowski, insisted that they could not serve unless they took their oaths in Nawrocki’s presence. The president blocked the normal procedure, and the Tribunal’s leadership used that blockage to keep them out. On October 30, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the temporary suspension of Święczkowski and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochański, and assumed leadership of the Tribunal. Lawyers dispute whether she had the legal authority to suspend them in that way. That specific step deserves legal scrutiny. It does not erase the obstruction that led to it. I support Tusk’s efforts to end this obstruction, and I don’t buy the claims of a coup. PiS does not get to unlawfully install its own judges, refuse to respect court rulings, and then demand that everyone treat the situation it created as untouchable. Tusk is right to push back. Judges elected by the Sejm should be allowed to do their jobs. The president has constitutional duties, not a personal veto over the court’s membership. And PiS has no permanent claim to Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal.

Sure. When the PiS were in office, they stacked the Constitutional Tribunal with their supporters. Now their terms have finished, the Parliament, in line with the constitution, have appointed some new judges, but the President (still PiS) has refused to accept their oaths of office (if he doesn't accept them they can't be judges on the CT, even though it should be a formality). The new judges have attempted to take their places on the CT and have voted by a majority to unseat the current CT chair (PiS supporter). The Police were called to prevent a disturbance outside the CT.

horrific. And yet where are the protests on the street? #nojewsnonews
HORRIFYING: New footage shows Boko Haram Islamic jihadists in Africa massacring Christians with machetes. This year alone, more Christians have been killed in Nigeria than Palestinians in 3 years of war. Don’t stop talking about the real genocide of Christians in Nigeria.

MORE protests in Sydney this weekend. No doubt #nojewsnonews
The videos emerging from Africa of Islamists slaughtering Christians are truly satanic. I have seen a video of Jihadists cutting the limbs off young Christian men and women before beheading them. I genuinely don't understand why nobody is talking about this.

In Jordan the army is far more concerned with ensuring that Islamic militants cannot act in this way than they are about what happens over the Jordan River.
The King of Jordan has been a steadfast friend to Christians and helped rebuild the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Greek Orthodox parish attacked in Karak during a funeral(!) reminds us that vile terrorism has never gone away.
