Lots of debate this week on whether journals should ban AI in peer review. We actually tested this in our new preprint, and the results were pretty clear to me. For context, I've reviewed for most of the big journals and evaluated 1,000 human reviews as an editor. I love to read and evaluate science. TLDR: From now on I won't do any peer review without AI. For clinical trials, I'd even call human-only review dangerous 🧵

Could Marine Le Pen, runaway favourite and twice convicted, still be banned from taking part in the French presidential election next April-May? A very senior, retired French judge has infuriated the Far Right leader by confirming what we at @EurasiaGroup said in July.  Yes, Le Pen COULD still be banned -  in two circumstances. 1/ lefigaro.fr/actualite-france…

Important, but not unexpected, finding that experts working with AI agents are swayed by the positions of the AI, even if they think they are working independently. If your independent judgement matters on a task, you need to be deliberate about when in the process to use AI.
Replying to @AlexTamkin
The agent was told to make the best honest case for its options, but to change its mind if the evidence required it, and never to mislead the analysts. Analysts went with the agent's lean 86% of the time. If the agent's lean had no effect, we'd expect this to be 50%.

Las dificultades del Fondo E se arrastran desde hace muchos años. Este gráfico es demoledor: mientras la rentabilidad (bruta) cayó a prácticamente cero, la volatilidad casi se triplicó. El mundo al revés.

New Zealand: remote South Pacific location, food surplus, low strategic value. Iceland: top Global Peace Index, isolated island, renewable energy and fishing. Switzerland: long neutrality, Alpine terrain, extensive nuclear bunkers. Argentina: vast agriculture, Southern Hemisphere distance from major powers. Chile: Andes and Pacific barriers, minerals and food self-sufficiency.

Meta had an internal PR plan to try and discredit Jon Haidt because he was a critic of social media. Meta was going to recruit academics, like Andrew Gelman, to write take down pieces. They were trying to turn academics against one another through a "whisper strategy". This is a very serious problem for open academic debate. If academics who share negative evidence about a platform are targeted by campaigns to smear our credibility, we are in deep, deep trouble. This creates a very serious conflict of interest for anyone who is paid to do this. law360.com/articles/2542517/…

How did Lula win the runoff? By winning over those who didn’t vote for him in round 1. His biggest gains came in places with more women, more white voters and more evangelicals. 🧵

Society and organizations invest heavily in selecting the best leaders, and existing research shows a positivity bias by focusing on the bright side of leadership. Should we focus on finding the best leaders or avoiding the worst? Our new paper provides robust evidence for an “avoid-the-worst” principle in human leadership preferences. We found that the top 100 business schools emphasize good leadership far more than the prevention of bad leadership. But actual employee experiences from 9.9 million Glassdoor reviews show that people mentioned their leader 70% more often in the negative than positive section, and negative leader mentions predicted company ratings 1.5 times more strongly. A bad-leader mention was also associated with 30% higher odds of leaving a company within the first year among former employees, whereas a good-leader mention is associated with only 5% lower odds of leaving. We also have causal evidence across 40 countries (N = 51,433) revealing that people were more willing to sacrifice time and money to avoid a bad leader than obtain a good leader (across both morality and competence). Our research suggests that people care more about avoiding the worst leaders than getting the best. But our leading schools are focused on the opposite issue. The central question of institutional design may not be who should rule, but how to prevent bad leaders from doing too much damage. This research was led by @H_Sjastad and @jareefbnmartuza Read the full paper here: osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/8g…
