Foursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. teendrama.substack.com/p/som…

"friction was a load-bearing part of the social compact" – wow, this is a great take!

Gonna re-post this post again because I think of it EVERYTIME my I instinctively/subconsciously reach for my phone (like a baby reaching for its binky or stuffy)
Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.

Impossible to watch this and not think that cellphones have completely ruined the modern concert experience
Gavin Rossdale from Bush is high as f*ck on molly playing Glycerine at Woodstock 1999.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Gavin Rossdale has only publicly mentioned smoking large amounts of marijuana around Woodstock 1999 and has never claimed to be on molly (or any specific drug) during Bush's Glycerine performance there. alternativenation.net/gavin-rossdale… youtube.com/watch?v=uBRM9b… youtube.com/watch?v=X6YEQV…

It is inevitable that our kids will grow up with AI friends that “grow” with them over time … thru chat / homework / video games / books / school etc. Maybe this is … fine? (tho still feels largely dystopian to me)
the agents are superhuman but it’s gonna impossible to RL to be fun to hang out with, I think. I hope.

This chart is gold.
The winners in consumer AI will be whoever solves the highlighted sections on this chart 👇 Privacy and trust concerns usually fade as people find products that add value to their lives The primary battle right now is against apathy

Wrote another one of these. I am desperate to get in a rhythm of doing it 2x/month. Writing these helps me organize my thinking / quiet my brain. Teendrama #25 – No phones, no scrolling, no Gen AI, other probably contradictory ramblings from someone (me) who’s still trying to make AI social software Bonus items: Lots of Chewbaccas, social software vs. social media vs. social hive minds, group bicycle rides, group street soccer, IRL vs. TikTok, Foursquare vs. closure, good times vs. struggles teendrama.substack.com/p/tee…

I asked BeeBot to keep an eye out for anything Street Fighter related and it highlighted a Smash Bros tournament nearby. That’s the AI future I’m here for.
