While male emperors traditionally had vast female harems, Wu Zetian—as the only female Emperor of China—established a harem of attractive, talented, or politically favored men.
Her four most prominent male favorites were:
1. Xue Huaiyi (薛懷義)
Background: Originally a street peddler named Feng Xiaobao (馮小寶), he was introduced to the imperial court for his physical stature and charisma.
Role & Impact: To give him acceptable social status to enter the palace freely, Wu Zetian had him ordained as a Buddhist monk and appointed him abbot of the prominent Baima (White Horse) Temple.
Political Role: Xue Huaiyi helped legitimize her rule by promoting the Great Cloud Sutra, which prophesied the arrival of a female deity who would rule the world as a wise monarch. He also oversaw the construction of the Mingtang (Hall of Enlightenment) ritual complex.
Downfall: As he grew arrogant and volatile due to her declining attention in later years, he reportedly burned down the Mingtang complex in a fit of jealousy. He was executed shortly thereafter in 695 AD.
2. Shen Nanliao (沈南璆)
Background: An imperial physician known for his gentle demeanor and medical skill.
Role: He became her personal favorite after the execution of Xue Huaiyi. However, his tenure was short-lived as he died of illness relatively early in their relationship.
3. Zhang Changzong (張昌宗) & Zhang Yizhi (張易之)
Background: Two handsome brothers from an aristocratic family, often referred to as the Zhang Brothers. Zhang Changzong (nicknamed Liulang) was initially introduced to Empress Wu in 697 AD by her daughter, Princess Taiping. Changzong then recommended his older brother, Zhang Yizhi (nicknamed Wulang).
Influence & Power: In Wu Zetian's final years (when she was in her late 70s and 80s), the Zhang brothers accumulated massive political influence. They controlled access to the ailing Empress, interfered in court appointments, and acted as her de facto mouthpieces.
Downfall: Their consolidation of power angered both the Tang royal family and high-ranking court officials. In 705 AD, prime minister Zhang Jianzhi launched a palace coup (the Shenlong Coup). The Zhang brothers were executed inside the imperial grounds, and Empress Wu was forced to abdicate the throne to her son, restoring the Tang Dynasty.
