Replit was building toward the AI coding era years before it had a name. In 2024, the company shipped an agent that could take a request in plain English, work through errors, provision its own infrastructure, and keep going until the software actually worked. The model companies even reached out to ask how Replit had pulled it off. Co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad had been thinking about making programming radically more accessible since 2008, and Replit’s original pitch deck predicted AI-generated code before the Transformer paper was published. Today, that same technology is moving into banks, manufacturers, and other large companies, where Amjad says teams are replacing software projects once scoped at $10 million with $250,000 of Replit. On How to Build the Future, @paulg sits down with @amasad to talk about why @Replit was so well positioned when coding agents arrived, what comes after vibe coding, and his bigger vision for the “self-driving company,” where AI agents increasingly build and operate the software a company needs. 00:00 - "You guys basically invented vibe coding" 02:43 - Watching users copy-paste from ChatGPT 05:27 - The origins of Replit 08:00 - People underestimate their ability to predict the future 10:27 - Grieving the craft 12:52 - A culture of obsessing over users 15:13 - Why enterprises pick Replit 17:28 - The agent was just another user 20:17 - It barely worked, and users loved it 23:13 - $10 million projects now for $250,000 25:45 - Sandboxing for humans 28:14 - "The self-driving company" 30:34 - The way AI flows into companies 33:28 - What Steve Jobs knew before the iPad 35:59 - Killing the sacred cow 38:25 - The rest of the world is two years behind 41:15 - The compute brought on AI 43:46 - The person who assumes dramatic change

Replit is the only collaborative AI coding system out there.
I want Claude Code to: - Be a chat for my team - Every thread is a chat room we're both in - We can both prompt and steer a thread, or talk to each other and the agent can just keep cranking until it thinks we're saying something it needs to do differently Does this exist?

If you’re going to make something with AI, make sure it’s 10,000x better than anything you would have made yourself. If not, you just come across as lazy not smart :)

Security testing is moving from a yearly checkup to always on 18% of CISOs run most of their offensive testing continuously today, 52% expect to within a year They also want AI to close the loop, 70% would use it to retest and confirm their fixes actually worked From a16z's @OwenColby and @steph_zhang, breaking down a survey of 100 CISOs at companies with 1,000+ employees: a16z.news/p/the-new-security…

Just got Apple’s statement on cracked / broken inner screens on some iPhone Duo units: “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.” A few more points from Apple: ➡️ The issue is affecting a very small number of units. ➡️ The defect appears to show up relatively quickly after people begin using the device Translation: Please do not call this HingeGate! It's not a gate!

I am shocked, absolutely shocked, that Anthropic ARR has likely gone vertical in October after they cut token prices. Except the exact same thing happened for the entire AI market, which is why GPU rental prices have surged while token prices declined. $100b plus in year-end ARR looks possible again.

Eric Schmidt (@ericschmidt) says an OpenAI spinout he funded expects to need just 15 employees to manage AI agents. "One of the things that this means is that there will be a lot more companies with a lot fewer people." "I funded a tech startup, which is spin out of OpenAI. And I talked to them for a while. And I said, well, how many people do you need? 15." "What do they do? ... They manage the agents." "So what do you need? A lot of money. Why? Because he's going to use all these different computer systems to replicate humans." "Now, this does not mean that there are no jobs. This is a falsehood in the narrative. It means there'll be a lot of these 15-person startups." "Now, this has a property that the most successful companies will have huge revenue per employee. Big deal. That's wealth creation. That's good for the employees. Is it good for society? Well, it depends on how good the product is." - Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, on Génération Do It Yourself with Matthieu Stefani

Good thing Mr. Hatfield didn't turn in his old Apple-1 for an Apple // when Steve Jobs gave him that option 50 years ago. It just sold at auction for $1,148,200 (including Bonham's premium) - a new record for an Apple-1. There are only 75 Apple-1's known to survive.
