I’m delighted to share that I’ll be co-editing an issue of the Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society on the theme "Revisiting the Economic Geographies of the Defence Industry."
You can find the full description of the issue’s scope here:: academic.oup.com/cjres/pages…
Last week’s peace deal between the Syrian Armed Forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces, if it holds, may have brought the Transitional Government’s ambition of stabilizing post-revolutionary Syria one step closer. Decisions made in the next few months—including those on military funding—will shape the conditions under which that happens.

A troubling figure released today by @SIPRIorg reveals a record surge in global military spending – now at $2.7 trillion, up from $2.4 trillion in 2023.
An arms race is never the solution.
It takes away resources from peace and development.
It magnifies the anxieties distrust and fear among people.
Through the Pact for the Future, @UN member countries have requested a report on how the #GlobalGoals are being impacted by the rise in military spending.
Let’s unite in prioritizing people, peace, and our planet – not a path of death and destruction.

Last week, SIPRI researchers Caroline Delgado and @dielopesilva joined SIPRI Chair Stefan Löfven for an informal meeting in Stockholm with Colombian President @petrogustavo to present their latest research on Colombia🇨🇴.

Global #MilitaryExpenditure surged in 2023, hitting $2443 billion, marking a 6.8% real increase from 2022—the largest jump since 2009 per @SIPRIorg.
With this uptick, are we seeing the Military Committee tackle the mandate outlined in Art. 26 of the UN Charter today?"
👇👇👇
At a time when we see rising hunger, growing poverty & a lack of financing to address the climate crisis, it's shocking to see military expenditure reaching an unprecedented high—$2443 billion in 2023, according to @SIPRIorg.
It's time to stop running towards mutual destruction.
