QUANTUM CAMERAS ARE COMING?! Every camera ever built hits the same wall, the diffraction limit. Resolution is capped by the size of the lens. For 150 years, seeing farther meant building a bigger telescope. It's why spy satellites are enormous. An MIT and University of Maryland spinout called Diffraqtion says it broke that wall and they're backed by LOCKHEED MARTIN. Conventional cameras measure how bright light is at each pixel and throw away everything else. Diffraqtion's cameras sort light by its shape instead, reading information every normal sensor discards. Quantum measurement theory says it was always there but nobody was looking. The claim: resolve features up to 20x smaller than the diffraction limit allows, from a fraction of the aperture, size, and cost. Onboard processing that classifies targets orders of magnitude faster. It's not a lab slide, they've done on sky demonstrations at an observatory, distinguishing closely spaced objects. DARPA advanced their program to its second phase. NASA picked them for orbital debris tracking. And this week Lockheed Martin Ventures and Sumitomo's venture arm closed their round at $10M+. Next step will be the first camera flies on a partner spacecraft. No qubits, no cryogenics, no quantum computer. It's quantum optics, using the quantum nature of light itself. Passive, cheap, and it works now. Lockheed cares because a small satellite that sees like a big one changes space reconnaissance economics entirely. Whoever tracks and identifies objects in orbit with the cheapest hardware wins the space domain. Quantum computing gets the headlines, yet quantum sensing keeps quietly shipping. $INFQ $IONQ $QBTS $RGTI

Exactly. And physical AI requires the most powerful sense of all, vision! That’s why we’re building quantum cameras for physical AI.
BREAKING: Nvidia declares physical AI could become “10x larger than digital AI” with Jensen Huang predicting every industrial company will become a robotics company.

Love this AI image about Diffraqtion from the SiliconSnark article! 😅 We do indeed have a telescope on the roof of Greentown Labs to execute tests, although our Engineers Bouke and Itay are a bit less yellow :) And the sign in the back summarizes our quantum camera perfectly: ✅ Two Sats ✅ One Speck ✅ Zero Problems siliconsnark.com/diffraqtion…

For decades, “see farther” mostly meant “build bigger optics.” Diffraqtion is betting that physics, photon counting, and AI can break that tradeoff. If they’re right, this is a much bigger story than another camera startup.
For as long as cameras have existed, seeing farther has meant building bigger optics. We're building quantum camera platforms that break that rule and enable space domain awareness and reconnaissance missions. Today we're announcing strategic investments from Lockheed Martin Ventures and Presidio Ventures, the venture arm of Sumitomo Corporation, capping our pre-seed at over $10M in total funding. Seven months ago we came out of stealth with a first close led by Ground State Ventures. Since then, we completed on-sky demonstrations at a partner observatory, distinguishing closely spaced objects. Our Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR advanced into its second option period. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration selected us for an SBIR Phase I in orbital debris tracking and named us the winner of its $100,000 Space to Soil Challenge. Our cameras sort incoming light by its shape rather than its brightness, measuring information conventional systems discard. That means resolving detail below the diffraction limit at a fraction of the aperture, size, and cost. Next comes our first fielded camera. Flight heritage is planned through a hosted payload on a partner spacecraft. Thank you to SBI US Gateway Fund, Plug and Play, Collaborative Fund, and TekVentures, and to Aether VC, milemark•capital, and ADIN for following on. Link to the full release in the first comment.

Proud to follow on as @diffraqtion caps its pre-seed at $10M+ with @LockheedMartin Ventures and Presidio Ventures. Seeing farther used to mean bigger optics. Their quantum cameras break that rule, they sort light by shape, not brightness, and resolve below the diffraction limit at a fraction of the aperture, size, and cost. That's space domain awareness and reconnaissance without the telescope tax. Seven months: on-sky demos, DARPA Direct-to-Phase-II, NASA debris SBIR, Space to Soil. Next is a fielded camera and flight heritage. The kind of national-security hardware we want more of!!! 🇺🇸 Congrats @jgalatsanos and team.

wild that seeing farther has always meant building a bigger lens. @diffraqtion is breaking that, quantum cameras that sort light by shape, not brightness using sub-diffraction resolution without the giant aperture. nice one @jgalatsanos!!

Quantum imaging startup @diffraqtion announced more than $5M in additional funding on Monday, more than doubling its pre-seed from when it first closed in January. The MA-based company is building cameras for space using quantum imaging and AI to either spot faraway objects, or to see closer objects clearly with a much smaller lens. The aim is to cut both processing time and cost, using the tech to give exquisite capability for a fraction of the usual price. Since the company emerged from stealth with its pre-seed round this year, it’s notched some milestones, including: 🔭 Demoing its tech at a terrestrial observatory. 🛰️ Securing a SBIR Phase I award from NASA for tracking space debris. 💸 Winning NASA’s Space to Soil Challenge, in which companies designed small-sat missions using advanced computing to study the Earth. That came with a $100,000 prize. Read the full story from Payload editor @jacqfeldscher online. Link below.
