The unreinforced concrete dome of Rome's Pantheon - a miracle of ancient architecture that survived the fall of an empire. Nearly 2,000 years later, nobody has ever built a bigger one. The mighty dome, built by the Emperor Hadrian between 119-128 AD, measures 142 feet in diameter - still the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. Its most striking feature is a 27-foot wide oculus, completely open to the elements and acting as the building's only light source. Many believe the oculus once functioned as a giant sundial. Every year at noon on 21 April, traditionally the birthday of Rome, the sun’s rays light up the entrance - the Emperor entering the building on such occasions would have been bathed in sunlight in dramatic fashion. Most remarkable is the secret to the structure's longevity, itself a fascinating recent discovery. Roman concrete includes calcium carbonate lumps called "lime clasts" - these were previously thought to be the result of poorly mixed concrete, but are now understood to provide "self-healing" properties. Water seeping in through cracks in the concrete has been shown to dissolve the calcium carbonate, creating a solution which then recrystallizes to plug the gaps. It also boasts several other architectural innovations. The coffered ceiling was intended to reduce the weight of the dome (as did the oculus itself), and the mix of concrete used was exceptionally light by design. It also decreases in density moving from bottom to top, making greater use of lighter volcanic material. The result is one of ancient Rome's best preserved monuments that will likely stand for several more millennia. It inspired countless architectural feats over the ages since, notably Brunelleschi's dome of Florence Cathedral (1436), although that was built from brick - the ancient formula for concrete being long since forgotten. It stands today as a testament to the ancient Romans' unparalleled mastery of engineering. It even won the resounding endorsement of Michelangelo, architect of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, for which he undoubtedly took cues from the Pantheon. Seeing it for the first time in the early 1500s, he called it "an angelic and not a human design".

Julius Caesar was once kidnapped by pirates during the year 75 BC. He laughed when they demanded a ransom, saying they didn't know who they had captured, and insisted they ask for more. The pirates, who were based in Cilicia, demanded a ransom of twenty talents of silver for his release. However, Caesar, known for his wit and confidence, laughed at the pirates' demands, saying that he was worth at least fifty talents. He even joked with the pirates, telling them that when he was released, he would come back and capture them all. During his captivity, which lasted for approximately 38 days, Caesar maintained a friendly and confident demeanor with the pirates. He participated in their games and exercises, forming an odd camaraderie. Additionally, he utilized his time by writing poetry and speeches, which he read to his captors. Eventually, the ransom was paid, and Caesar was released. True to his word, after his release, he gathered a fleet and embarked on a mission to capture the pirates who had held him captive. He successfully apprehended them and had them executed as he had joked while in captivity. This event stands as a testament to both his resourcefulness and determination.

"My daughter and I are in Myrtle Beach taking a sunset walk when this adorable and sweet little boy comes walking right up to her. He shares with her the shark tooth around his neck. He tells her his name and asks her name to which she tells him. They part ways while saying goodbye, walking in the opposite direction. A few minutes later he comes running back, in what seems to be in slow motion, yelling out my daughter's name. She turns around and is greeted by his smile. So they share a few words, mainly about his super cool shark's tooth that apparently gave him powers 🙂. Before they walked, talked and raced, I asked his mother for permission to take this picture and this was the result. No one positioned them, told them to smile and there was absolutely no hesitation on their part at all. When we finished walking and it was time to go they hugged for a long time and exchanged about 20 "goodbyes" This is a moment that we humans understand as just simply seeing no color lines, no judgement, no race, no hate, no shades. It's just pure....two kids meeting on a sunset walk without a care in the world...all they saw was each other. This world would be a much better place if we acted like these two kids." The woman in the picture with a police officer is Helen Johnson from Tarrant, Alabama. She was caught stealing at a nearby Dollar General and the police were called to arrest her. The surprise of all is when the police officer arrived at the scene and asked her what she stole, she said, "Five Eggs To Feed My Hungry Children.". The police officer took her back to the supermarket and bought her groceries to feed herself and her kids. Miss Helena started crying and asked the police officer, "Sir, this is too much for you have done for me...". The police officer replied, "Sometimes we shouldn't apply the law but must apply the humanity!". ❤ Story Credit to: Carol Robinson

A drum solo by 18-year-old Karen Carpenter, 1968 Karen Carpenter was a talented American musician and drummer, best known for her role as the drummer and lead vocalist of the popular 1970s sibling duo "The Carpenters." Born on March 2, 1950, in New Haven, Connecticut, Karen developed a strong passion for music from an early age. She, along with her brother Richard, formed "The Carpenters," a musical group that achieved immense success during the early 1970s. Karen Carpenter's drumming skills were exceptional, contributing to the duo's unique sound. Her smooth, melodic voice was a defining characteristic of their music, which often incorporated elements of pop, soft rock, and adult contemporary genres. The Carpenters released numerous hit singles, including "Close to You," "We've Only Just Begun," and "Top of the World," earning them widespread recognition and commercial success. Tragically, Karen Carpenter's life was cut short when she passed away on February 4, 1983, at the age of 32, due to complications arising from anorexia nervosa. Her untimely death brought attention to the serious nature of eating disorders and shed light on the pressures faced by individuals in the music industry. Despite her short life, Karen Carpenter's musical legacy continues to influence artists and resonate with audiences around the world.
