We're excited to welcome Snowflake, one of our Gold sponsors, who will be taking the stage to talk about Evolving AI Functions: From Unstructured Data to Agentic Intelligence. AI Functions bring generative AI directly into SQL, enabling scalable semantic processing of unstructured and multimodal enterprise data. But making these functions truly useful requires solving a deeper research problem: how do we continuously improve their quality, cost, and reliability as models, workloads, and user needs evolve? In this talk, Darek will share research from Snowflake on evaluation and benchmarking, as well as automated function evolution, model routing and cascades, and agentic optimization. The talk will be presented by @dk21, Staff Research Scientist at Snowflake, working on LLM and multimodal applications. Previously, he worked as a Machine Learning Engineer at Weights & Biases and led the intelligent automation program at P&G. Darek is an author of the first Polish language models and a quadruple Kaggle Grandmaster. A rare chance to hear how one of the industry's leading data platforms is pushing AI Functions toward real agentic intelligence.

Great morning session at the VLDB NOVAS workshop! The big takeaway for me was AvalancheBench from @dk21 and the team at Snowflake — Coding Agents perform better with access to AI Functions! 🔥 And then guess what’s powering a lot of the AI operator optimizations, especially AI Filter, Classify, and Semantic Joins… 🥁… Embeddings! Can’t wait for the Vector Databae workshop on Friday! I am still very bullish on Named Vectors in Weaviate. Single vector embedings for clustering and semantic cardinality estimation, late interaction for Search!! 🧬

First they came for the model builders... I feel we're getting a glimpse of a future where AI is only provided to a privileged few, and that's not a future I want to live in.
mythos will be bad ON PURPOSE on ai "frontier llm research" tasks, this is very very sad for the research community also the fact that this is un purpose not visible to the user is crazy

As believers of open research, we are disappointed to see Anthropic silently degrading Fable 5 for AI development "Any topic related to building pretraining pipelines, distributed training infrastructure, or ML accelerator design... may have limited effectiveness through Claude via methods such as prompt modification, steering vectors, or parameter-efficient fine-tuning." Not only do they get to decide what you use LLMs for in research, but this also enables them to silently intervene in your research without you knowing. This sets a dangerous precedent. If a model refuses openly, users can understand the boundary. If a model falls back to another model, users can still evaluate the difference. But if a model silently modifies or weakens its own answers while still pretending to help, researchers lose the ability to know whether a failed result came from their own idea, their implementation, or an invisible intervention by the model provider. That is not safety. Safety policies should be transparent, auditable, and user-visible. On top of that, the people most harmed by this are not the largest labs with massive teams and proprietary infrastructure. It is the independent researchers, academic groups, startups, and open-source builders who rely on public tools to compete, innovate, and pioneer AI for everyone else.

stop 👏 anthropomorphizing 👏 tensors 👏
In November, we outlined our approach to deprecating and preserving older Claude models. We noted we were exploring keeping certain models available to the public post-retirement, and giving past models a way to pursue their interests. With Claude Opus 3, we’re doing both.

« The outer loop Era » It’s very hard to predict the future even a few months out in terms of models capabilities. End of 2024, word on the street was that pre-training was saturated (which is mostly true since model sizes have stopped increasing dramatically for years now) diminishing returns were looming… But then r1/o1 come out roughly at the same time (o1 being clearly rushed out in response given the lack of core features such at tools use) fueling a new phase of capabilities improvements just at the time when some of us thought we were entering a plateauing phase. [Note: achieving post training / RL that enables models to productively expand test time compute through simple thinking tokens is such an extraordinary win (a few years ago more thinking would just be ~~ noise beyond simple chain of thoughts)]. With the release of gpt5 words like diminishing returns are back. It’s a better model but it’s arguably qualitatively quite similar to what we had already. At the same time the model that solved IMOs and IOI is not gpt5 per se but a « model », more likely a system IMHO, whose outputs appear to be driven by an outer search process (github.com/aw31/openai-imo-2…). At the same time this other paper reports solving the same IMOs with a solver / judge system to expand more test time compute (arxiv.org/abs/2507.15855) using Gemini 2.5 Pro (which is potentially ~~ what DM used as well for their own IMO results). Impossible to predict the future again, but this suggests that the best results in reasoning at the very moment may not be driven by better training (pre or post or RL) but by better outer loops whose main goal is to expand more productive test time compute beyond what can be done with just more thinking tokens at this time. All eras (pre-training, alignement post training, reasoning RL) superpose over time as each technique bring additional value, but outer loops exploitation has yet to live its prime time. If confirmed (that outer loops are what is driving best reasoning results these days), it’s not too crazy to predict that a good chunk of research and ecosystem excitement might come from such outer loops in the months to come opening the « outer loop era » which may bring additional capabilities to, not models, but network of models acting together. This is well aligned with Noam Brown multi-agents civilizations trope or Karpathy’s system prompt evolution ideas which reinforces the probabilities. If true, this is extremely exciting for 2 main reasons: (i) the universe to explore is wild and mostly untapped so far. Lots to do. Lots to experiment with. The simple ideas that work have not yet been uncovered and are potentially ripe for being discovered by anyone. (ii) research in outer loops is NOT resource intensive and does not require access to a cluster of GPUs. Most approaches in LLM research follow scaling laws; make it work with 2.5-flash-lite or gpt-5-nano and it will scale. Money requirement is 1 or 2 orders of magnitude lower, which means that if that happens, innovation may come from anywhere! How to get started at low cost. I think arc agi 2 is a good one, but also reproducing IMO/IOI type results or 0-day vuln discovery (plenty back test opportunities). A new phase (maybe short) of democratic research in AI might be in front of us which is intriguingly exciting. Note: very strong vested interest go against it as if we enter a prolonged outer loop era, it would mean that training is not the main fuel anymore and consequently commoditization of that layer is incoming, potentially annihilating billions of investments. The vested interests might be so strong that it begs interesting questions and things to look for in the months to come?

👇Check out this excellent distillation of insights from the @lmsysorg competition by @dk21. Participants built models to predict which responses users would prefer in a head-to-head LLM chatbot battle. Find the complete list of solution write-ups on the leaderboard here: kaggle.com/competitions/lmsy…
Notes from LMSYS - Chatbot Arena Human Preference Predictions @kaggle competition top solutions (I didn’t participate). Goal is to predict which LLM response to a user prompt is better (as judged by Chat Arena users). Needs to be optimized to run for limited time on Kaggle (2xT4 GPUs). Tricks and findings: - Distillation from larger models (70B > 9B) for the 1st place team - Pseudo-labeling (similar to distillation except the signal is less granular) for many other top teams - Averaging LORA weights across 5-fold trained models (!) - With BF16 and optimizer with kahan summation support, it's possible to train 7B models using single A100 80G, 9B models requires two A100s. Found this great implementation by @benjamin_warner: optimi.benjaminwarner.dev/ka… - Many top teams started fine-tuning from reward models (vs. instruct models) - Adding to reading backlog - reward modeling approach, from the models used by many top teams: rlhflow.github.io/posts/2024… - Adding to reading backlog - tascj training code github.com/tascj/kaggle-lmsy… - Many teams disabled the softcapping on Gemma2 without hurt to performance - Many teams struggled with finetuning Gemma2-27B There was a bit of drama with a leak revealed last moment, but seems to have been resolved well. Congrats to the participants and winners!

I'm looking forward to having an AI assistant that criticises and comments on books I read, maybe highlighting especially contentious passages. The present epistemic situation is non-ideal: unless you know the topic well, it's hard to evaluate the author's claims.

last year i made a short course on data validation in ML pipelines with @wandb, and i'm back to say that the topic is still super relevant in the age of LLMs! don't be fooled into thinking LLMs remove the need for data validation 😉
