Love time travel stories? Here's a unique one for you - Future In Doubt. What if a time traveler came back in time warning of a future apocalypse, but no one believed him, and then he died? Except for one fresh college grad named Essie... See replies for more.

Now there's an interesting idea. Obviously will never happen, but the thought behind it is good - Movies that endure are truly the Best Pictures, regardless of how anyone felt that particular year.
MATT DAMON SAYS THE OSCARS SHOULD BE DECIDED 20 OR 25 YEARS AFTER A MOVIE IS RELEASED Damon argues that awards often reflect the hype of the moment rather than a film’s lasting impact. He believes waiting decades would reveal which movies truly stand the test of time and still matter to audiences long after the initial buzz fades.

So it turns out the McRib is made from shoulder meat. Makes sense.

The other reason Inglorious Basterds was a weaker film is a glaring plot problem: Why in the world would they send Stiglitz into the basement? Any Nazis would likely recognize him, and it totally exposes the secret agent for that reason. Am I missing something, Tarantino fans?

Why Inglorious Basterds is Tarantino's worst film: I finally saw Inglorious Basterds...so I have only two Tarantino movies I haven't seen. I'd put this at the bottom of his filmography, and here's why: All Tarantino's movies are violent. And violence on its own in movies is fine - as long as it has a narrative or thematic purpose for being there. Even allowing for some excess here, as many of his movies have, the violence in Inglorious goes far beyond all the others in one key way: It's simply not necessary to show someone scalping their enemy. This matters because these are the 'good guys' in the movie. So as the viewer, I'm supposed to root for this, be happy about this, even laugh at this - at watching people desecrate and mutilate their enemies. And this is all justified by the time-worn cliche that "oh these are Nazis so it's okay." It isn't. I don't find it funny or entertaining to see that kind of behavior - and these are not 'good guys' for taking part in it, but we are supposed to react as if they are. This sort of thing doesn't happen in any other Tarantino movie: Pulp Fiction - extreme violence happens by accident, and is also used to get out of terrible situations Kill Bill - extreme violence is employed to avenge a terrible injustice Django - extreme violence is employed to rescue an enslaved wife Reservoir Dogs - extreme violence is undertaken by the villains - and this is why they're villains Hateful 8 - extreme violence is employed to get out of a terrible situation But in Inglorious, extreme violence is done, by the protagonists - and just for the fun of it. NOT the same. So though the movie has some impressive narrative touches and some very well done scenes and terrific acting and humor, I can't get into the overall story because it truly is celebrating and glorifying horrific violence, and it wants me to laugh at it.

I showed The Mask to my 11yo. He now understands how much better even just above average comedies used to be compared to anything today. "Bazooka." "I have a permit for that."

Wow. I just learned that insurance fraud costs American families $400 - $700 per year in higher premiums. Hey thieves and losers - stop being such morons. You're costing us lots of money.

Rewatched High Noon yesterday. Have you seen it? This is an incredible movie. Holds up even by modern day standards, if there is such a thing. And it has Grace Kelly - the clip below is not from the movie. My only criticism is that the villains are a little less fierce or cunning than they are built up to be. But since that's not the point of the story, it gets a pass. Have you seen it?

I seriously don't know how I'm ever going to get out of this funk again. Everything good has been taken from me, and I failed to respond the way the great characters in my stories would have. I guess that's why they call it make-believe.

I watched Strangers on a Train for the first time ever. And since I'm reviewing movies and books for The Highline Journal, I figured - "Why not?" So I wrote a review for a 75 year old movie! See my take on the Hitchcock classic.

I voted. In related news, for a list of all the candidates and ballot measures that are going to win, just look for the opposite of my ballot.

It doesn't speak well of maga that I keep getting these spam texts from maga orgs asking me for money. I have blocked at least 10 numbers, and they keep sending me texts from new ones. This violates the CAN-SPAM Act. If you guys get caught, you'll be fined, and you'll deserve it. I don't care what side of the political aisle you're on. Send me stupid texts I don't want and never signed up for, and you will get what's coming to you.

You know what's amazing about this? On the show, whenever everyone on the bridge gets taken out by something, Kirk was always the last one standing. As of today, life has imitated art.
Walter Koenig is gone at 90. Chekov. The kid at the navigation console who made the Enterprise feel like it belonged to everyone. Some of us watched him on a black-and-white set, and we never forgot him. Rest easy, Ensign. Your watch is over. 🖖

When they say that criticism is fun to read and to write, this is why. A good thrashing of another lame modern-day film is good for the soul.
My late to the party review: THE END OF OAK STREET is a movie where Anne Hathaway plays a mom who hates her family for some reason that is never explained. Lucky for the rest of them they all go to Jurassic Park before she has a chance to abandon them. Ewan McGregor has had a long time to work on his American accent but apparently not long enough. David Robert Mitchell had a chance to make a subversive take on the Spielbergian movies of the 1980s but he either chickened out or someone wouldn't let him off the chain. MAGA will hate this movie and call it "woke." Which may be true but only like a "random Black friend" (RBF) in a beer commercial who doesn't get any good lines. Also because all the male characters are depicted as dumb and/or incompetent. There are lesbians here too but if you're a homophobe, don't worry: all they get to do is hug and make goo-goo eyes at each other. For the rest of us coastal elite liberal progressive leftists, this half-assed attempt at diversity, equity, and inclusion deserves all the praise of a college boy at a liberal arts school who wears a "The Future Is Female" T-shirt because he thinks it will get him laid. Overall, I give this movie a C+. Thankfully none of my enthusiasm for THEY FOLLOW has diminished. If this is what it took for Mitchell to get his sequel, then sitting through this movie is a small price to pay.

I saw a guy wearing a T-shirt at the gym today that said "No mas Hamas" I'm not normally into fashion, but...

Tom Skerrit was one of the great ones. My favorite role of his will always be in Contact, where he plays the ambitious corporate-oriented scientist opposite Jodie Foster. It's a nuanced, layered character who has his own distinct arc in what is an outstanding film. He will be missed.
Tom Skerritt, who starred in the TV series “Picket Fences” and appeared in movies ranging from “MASH” to “Alien,” “Top Gun,” “A River Runs Through It” and “Ted,” has died of natural causes at 93. variety.com/2026/film/news/t…

I've done an experiment: It took me 2 months and 12 days to use one roll of toilet paper. My wife goes through the whole thing in less than a week.
