I just randomly remembered the case of Farouk Lawan and how greed landed him in prison. In early 2012, following nationwide strikes against the removal of fuel subsidies, the Nigerian House of Representatives set up an ad-hoc committee chaired by Hon. Farouk Lawan to investigate a multi-billion-naira fuel subsidy fraud regime. The committee conducted its investigation and identified several companies that had been defrauding the Federal Government through spurious subsidy claims. Among the companies identified was Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, owned by billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. But something very interesting happened! According to Femi Otedola, Hon. Farouk Lawan allegedly demanded a $3 million bribe from him to remove Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited from the list of indicted companies. Rather than pay the bribe quietly, Otedola reported the alleged extortion attempt to the Department of State Services (DSS). Working with security operatives, Otedola set up a sting operation and recorded meetings where Lawan collected $500,000 in marked cash. In fact, he was famously caught on camera stuffing the money inside his cap. He was later arraigned in court, where he argued that he accepted the money not as a bribe, but as "sting/entrapment evidence" to expose Otedola's attempt to compromise the committee. His case travelled from the High Court to the Supreme Court, where his five-year conviction was affirmed at the apex court. He was also ordered to return the $500,000 he collected from Otedola. He finished his prison sentence in 2024 and was subsequently granted a pardon in 2025 by President Tinubu's administration. And you will ask, what about the allegations and indictment that his committee made against Femi Otedola and his company for allegedly defrauding Nigeria through subsidy claims? Well, the EFCC later cleared Otedola's company of involvement in the subsidy fraud. What an interesting twist! I am Ekene Aninze, Esq.

Yesterday at the ICC, Awka, we inaugurated the Anambra State structure for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is more than politics. It is a battle for the soul of Nigeria, for Ndigbo, and for Anambra. I told our people - politics is between emotion and reason. Emotion may dominate for a moment, but reason ultimately prevails. From Zik to Ekwueme to Okadigbo, our forebears always played politics at the centre. We cannot afford to be insular. APGA and APC share the same progressive DNA - true federalism and shared prosperity. That is why we have chosen to align with the centre. We cannot build railways, gas pipelines and the infrastructure our future needs with state resources alone. We need a strong partnership at the centre. Despite getting just over 5,000 votes here in 2023, President Tinubu has supported Anambra. Imagine what we can attract when we vote massively for him. For me, this is about the future. After the South completes its second term, power will go North before it returns to the South again around 2039. Where will Ndigbo be? We must be at the table, not outside protesting. History shows that a strong incumbent is never defeated by a fractured opposition. Let us unite and secure our stake in Nigeria's future. May Anambra continue to win!

2027: Residents Slam Major Jack’s Vehicle Giveaway, Demand Funding Source Port harcourt, Rivers – Concerned residents of Port-Harcourt have questioned the funding source and timing of an empowerment programme organised by Major Jack, describing the exercise as classic political patronage ahead of the 2027 elections. A video circulating widely on social media shows rows of cars, commercial vans, motorcycles, boats and other items lined up for distribution. Jack, the Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly representing Akuku-Toru Constituency I, is the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate. He is running with Kingsley Ogundu Chinda in the 2027 contest. He defected to the APC in December 2025 alongside Speaker Martin Amaewhule and other lawmakers. Critics say the absence of any official breakdown of the programme’s cost, beneficiary selection criteria or funding source lies at the heart of the controversy. In Nigerian politics, large-scale giveaways of vehicles, boats and equipment by candidates or sitting officials especially so close to a major election are routinely viewed as vote-buying or patronage rather than neutral development intervention. The items on display represent substantial capital outlay. Without transparent accounting, suspicion is high that public resources or unaccounted political funds are being deployed to build loyalty networks. Dubem Njoku, a Port-Harcourt resident, said such programmes typically target specific communities or party structures, creating clientelist ties that convert material gifts into expected electoral support. He stressed that the timing heightens the concern: with the 2027 contest approaching and Rainbow Coalition dynamics already playing out in Rivers State, the distribution looks less like sustained economic empowerment and more like a strategic pre-campaign investment. “Genuine empowerment would emphasise skills, sustainable livelihoods, monitoring and open procurement. Spectacle distributions of high-value assets without those elements fit the patronage pattern long criticised across parties in the state and nationally,” Njoku told DAILY South Nigeria. Observers note that similar events by candidates from various parties have drawn the same accusations—that public money or opaque war chests are used to secure influence rather than address structural unemployment or infrastructure deficits. Miss Joyce, another resident and a political science graduate, insisted that until Major Jack’s team publishes a clear statement on the exact source of the funds, the selection process, the total value of the items and any link to state budgets or legislative constituency projects, the programme will continue to be read by sceptics as political patronage dressed up as empowerment. In the high-stakes Rivers political environment marked by shifting alliances, she argued, such optics are powerful and precisely why questions about whose money paid for the items will not go away.
