This week was one of those weeks that reminded me just how special high school athletics are in Texas. Tuesday at Canyon HS, I watched a community come together to celebrate the history and tradition of Canyon athletics. Last night, I saw packed stands at a high school football game. And today, I watched athletes compete for a water polo state championship surrounded by coaches, athletic directors, families and fans. Three different days. Three different settings. The same story. There are GREAT things happening in our public schools every day. Our students have exceptional, passionate people leading them and communities that show up for their schools, their coaches and their kids. We can listen to talking points and watch political ads tell us what we’re supposed to believe. But no political ad can compete with what you see when you walk into a packed stadium, gym or natatorium in a Texas community. People show up for their schools. Most importantly, they show up for their kids. Texas high school athletics are pretty special. ❤️

High school athletics is fascinating because the same parent who demands accountability from coaches will explain why their child shouldn't have consequences for missing three practices. Accountability is apparently a one-way street.

Rest in peace to a legend...Toya Jones one of the greatest prep athletes in texas high school history
Rest in Paradise, Toya Jones ❤️ It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Toya Jones, a proud member of the Refugio High School Class of 1995. Some people come into this world with a special gift, and Toya was one of those people. He was an incredible athlete, a fierce competitor, and, without a doubt, one of the greatest athletes to ever wear the colors of Refugio High School. When Toya stepped onto the track or the field, you knew you were about to witness something special. He had a God-given talent that was truly amazing to watch. I will never forget the excitement of getting in the car and making that drive to Austin to watch Toya compete at the state track meet. There was something special about knowing you were going to watch someone you knew accomplish extraordinary things. And Toya never disappointed. Thirteen gold medals at the state track meets! Just think about that. What an incredible accomplishment. I remember watching him compete and thinking how fortunate I was to witness such greatness firsthand. Those are memories I will always carry with me. When Toya graduated from Refugio, his journey continued to Texas A&M University, where he signed to play football and run track. I would look forward to Saturdays, watching the Aggies play and hoping to catch a glimpse of Toya on that field. Every time I saw him out there, I felt that hometown pride. That was our Toya—a Refugio athlete who had made it to the next level and given us another reason to cheer. It’s hard to put into words what it feels like to hear that someone you remember being so full of life, strength, and promise is gone. Somehow, it just doesn’t seem right. Superheroes aren’t supposed to pass away. And to those of us who watched Toya run, compete, and accomplish things most could only dream of, he truly seemed like a superhero. Today, my heart goes out to Toya’s family, friends, former teammates, classmates, and everyone who loved him. I pray that God wraps His loving arms around each of you and gives you comfort and strength during this difficult time. Toya, thank you for the memories. Thank you for the excitement of those trips to Austin, the Saturday afternoons watching the Aggies, and the pride you brought to Refugio. Thank you for reminding us what determination, talent, and a competitive spirit look like. You may be gone from this earth, but the memories of watching you do what you did best will stay with me forever. I can only imagine the race waiting for you in Heaven. No pain, no struggles, just a golden track and a finish line that never comes too soon. Rest in Paradise, Toya. Until we meet again, I’ll be looking forward to watching you run one more time on that golden track. You were one of a kind, and you will never be forgotten. ❤️🙏🏽

Cal running back Marshawn Lynch has takes the injury cart and is driving around the field to celebrate 😂 This Marshawn Lynch kid is something else!
An interception by the Cal defense wins the game and the Bears survive a thrilling finish in this Pac 10 battle!

Honestly Crazy to me, love my job and my wife will tell you I put in way more hours at the house than I should, but I've come to learn that family is way more important. If I dropped dead today. I'd get a social media post and my initials on a sticker on the helmet but everything will still move on, but my kids and wife will grieve for years to come. Keys to being a good coach aren't hard: 1. Follow and trust in our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. 2. Love your family, and cherish every moment with them. 3. Pour everything you have into building young men to be better fathers and Husbands using the greatest game on the planet.

THIS! ☝️ My dad was a truck driver for 30+ years with a hazmat endorsement. When I started coaching and told him they wanted me to get my CDL he said, “I’ve never hauled anything as valuable and irreplaceable as human lives. I’d never do that for what they’re paying you…”

Risking a very sad “I told you so” moment with this logic. Far too often coaches are asked to go against federal guidelines for CDL, and drive after a full day of work. No other profession in the world asks someone to do that. It will be an open & shut case.

The gap between the top and the middle group of kids is going to widen.
How big of a hit will girls T&F take from girls flag football.

The unpaid training, from 6-10pm after teaching and coaching all day, and then 8am-4pm on a Saturday, while having to use my conference period to memorize the parts of a bus engine was when I started planning my exit from teaching/coaching.

We expect more out of you, and will not be compensating you for it. You’ll be held to a higher standard, be responsible for an expensive vehicle, and the lives of some 50 souls on board. You’ll drive this oversized, under maintained vehicle early before school, after school (maybe even pulling you out of practice… the very thing you’re applying to do), and late nights after games. You’ll do it on limited sleep, but we’ve opened you up to severe punishment by the DMV if you make a mistake while driving. You’re expected to drive pre-game. We don’t care if it interferes with your ability to mentally prepare for the game. You’ll drive post-game. We don’t care if you’re riding an emotional roller coaster, coming off an adrenaline rush from a victory or upset due to a loss. You’ll gladly jump into this role without the compensation or we’ll deduct your already minuscule wages. #TheTexasWay amirite
