The cruel, vulgar style of MAGA politics never really worked for anyone but Donald Trump, and even for him the act has worn thin. Now Americans have also repudiated the substance of Trumpism economist.com/united-states/…

Donald Trump made a trade deal with both Mexico and Canada. It was called a USMCA, and Trump said it was the greatest trade deal ever negotiated.
Canada never broke the agreement.
Mexico never broke the agreement,
Donald Trump broke the agreement!
Trump's word on international agreements is as worthless as his wedding vows.
Under @realDonaldTrump a promise made by the United States of America isn't worth a DAMN.

A note of caution: never underestimate the rage of a rejected autocrat. As a historian of autocrats, I am elated by Tuesday’s election results, but we will only see more chaos and erratic behavior.
I’ll be covering it at my Substack, Lucid.substack.com.

I was reading Heather Cox Richardson's daily newsletter, and she reminded me of something interesting that happened in Montana on Election Day:
Voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative to stop the flow of corporate money into political campaigns! Wow, right?
Instead of going after Citizens’ United, they argued that corporations are created by states, therefore the state can deny the power of corporations and other “artificial persons” to donate to political causes.
Only 34.5% of Montana voters opposed the measure. More than 65% voted yes.
Aren't you smiling? Who could possibly not think this is a step in the right direction?
Tell me you're not smiling.

Remember: in any given situation, Trump will *always* do, not just the wrong thing, but the worst possible thing. When making appointments, he will appoint, not just a bad person, but the worst possible person.
Steven Miller's immigration policy has taken arguably the GOP's best issue and made it a liability. He, second only to Trump himself, is responsible for blowing up the multiracial coalition that elected Trump in 2024 and sparked the GOP's dream of a multiracial working class coalition. He's also probably the single most despised person in American politics. So of course, Trump appointed him Chief of Staff after getting humiliated at the polls. It's so perfect.

NEW: Democrats are preparing to make Trump’s trade war with Canada their first target when they take control of the Senate in January, the WSJ reports.
Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, says there is “overwhelming support” for repealing the tariffs and that he’s already discussing legislation with colleagues.

Watching all these Republican attempts to explain why they lost the election is painful, because they cannot come out and say one simple truth. They handed the party to a corrupt, criminal, dictator-loving, economic and strategic idiot--who proceeded to be all of these things.

Tom Nichols nails the core irony: Trump spent years admiring Orbán's method, weakening institutions and betting democratic machinery could be bent to protect his power. Then voters handed him the part of the Orbán story he forgot to study: the one where the result is too overwhelming to fake, spin, or challenge.
Trump spent weeks telling Americans to vote as if he were on the ballot. They did. Then he explained the defeat by saying he wasn't on it. That is one hell of a referendum strategy: demand the public verdict, lose it decisively, and then pretend the grading rubric was unfair.
Trump wanted to be Orban. Well, he got his wish.
