Many books on autism tell you about autism. This book is different it discusses you, how it will change you, how you can choose do things differently, work around gatekeepers, get financial discounts (on council tax for example), access social security and direct payments

I really wonder if these people actually understand the strain unpaid carers are under? 1 in 3 has thought of ending it (see work of Siobhan O’Dwyer)
Emily Holzhausen, Director of Policy and Public Affairs at @CarersUK, welcomes the Government’s plan to end the Carer’s Allowance earnings cliff edge. It’s a long-overdue change that could make a real difference to carers and the families who depend on them. Under the current rules, earning even 1p over the £204 weekly limit can mean losing the entire £86.45 weekly allowance. The Government plans to replace that cliff edge with a gradual taper, deducting £1 of allowance for every £1 earned above the limit. The reform is welcome, though it is not expected to be fully implemented until towards the end of the decade. Around 180,000 carers reportedly built up £300 million in debts between 2019 and 2025 under the existing rules. But, as Emily says, this is only the start. The 2021 Census counted 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK, including 1.7 million providing at least 50 hours of care every week. Research by Carers UK and the Centre for Care estimates the value of that unpaid support at £184.3 billion a year. That is an enormous contribution to families, communities and the economy. Yet Carer’s Allowance is just £86.45 a week for someone providing at least 35 hours of care—about £2.47 for each minimum hour. For comparison, the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour - over 5x as much. Carer's Allowance remains the lowest benefit of its kind. Carers UK’s 2025 survey found that nearly half of carers had cut back on essentials such as food, heating or transport. - This is shameful for one of the richest countries in the world. A full review of the allowance and wider support is essential. And the need for change reaches beyond financial support for carers. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has set out plans for a National Care Service, including free personal care for older people based on need rather than ability to pay. Better, reliable social care could help people live with greater dignity and give families the support they need. It could also ease pressure on the NHS, where gaps in care can contribute to avoidable A&E attendances and delays in patients leaving hospital. For too long, families have been left to fill the gaps themselves. Recognising carers, properly supporting them and building a care service people can rely on would be a major step towards a fairer and more compassionate society. This, surely, is what it should mean to be British.

It is interesting to see reports of a sea change in the outcomes, but.. Every exclusion & suspension has consequences. Is every one investigated, justified or appropriate? Excluded lasts a lifetime
I am currently getting some comments about the high number of suspensions at my school. Whilst I am not responsible for them, I, and a lot of our teachers, support them. Our school is very different to what it was when I first joined, and suspensions have helped. 🧵/

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨 Carers will no longer lose their entire Carer's Allowance award if they go over the weekly earnings limit 📣👏 Under the planned change, payments would reduce by £1 for every £1 earned above the limit, replacing the current rule that can leave carers losing their whole award for earning just 1p too much. Contact, alongside our parent carer campaigners, have long called for this change to help families balance paid work with caring. A huge win for our parent carer campaigners 👏

I really wonder if Mr Hunt realises that he wishes to exclude mental illnesses?

An interesting viewpoint shared by many
I'm 100% in favor of self diagnosis, but I'm so fucking sick of the "autism doesn't make me disabled, it just makes me different" rhetoric. Autism is a developmental disability-the brain isn't properly developed in many executive areas. We're not just "wired differently". This belief that autism somehow only makes you think and communicate "differently" completely screws autistic people over when they have a public meltdown, say something very inappropriate, lash out from sensory overload

A recent survey by the National Autistic Society in the U.K. showed #ActuallyAutistic people and their loved ones say that the top three places to hear misinformation was in the mainstream media, on social media and politicians or other public figures And looking at rhetoric from politics in the U.S. and U.K., it's pretty easy to see why.

Whilst I won’t watch this programme because when you share a journey with autism you become painfully aware of T4 because of Asperger. Asperger sent children to their deaths. He was a Nazi. Everyone should visit the Denkmal at Tiergarten Str, 4.
Do watch 'The Experiment' Watch it here on Channel 4: channel4.com/programmes/the-… It offers some history on Aktion T4, the nazi Germany systematic killing of sick, disabled, mentally ill, learning disabled, children & adults from 1939 - 1945 where up to 300,000 were murdered. The forced sterilisation programme ran from 1933. Children & adults were murdered by lethal injection, starvation, and gassing (chamber & mobile van gassing), before it was implemented larger scale in the concentration camps. Mass murder didn't start there, it started with words, propaganda campaigns, to convince the population that disabled people were a burden not deserving of life. This programme was a social experiment to demonstrate how people could be convinced that it's a good idea. Participants were disabled actors with members of the public filmed on a fake tour of a fake residential home using nazi era ideas. The public were unaware of the experiment. The "workshop" showed disabled people doing what we know to be 'industrial therapy', which was still seen in the late 80s in the UK in the old style sprawling asylums like Napsbury and Friern and medium secure units. The public tour participants didn't appear to appreciate the demeaning nature of this. Residents wore uniform clothing, which reminded me of my experience of seeing shared clothing & no underwear in "cheaper" private care homes for older people in the 80s. It was only in the dormitory style barren bedroom with lockers did some tour participants start to question it, though others considered it acceptable. The Experiment held up a mirror to the current demonisation of disabled people, to the rhetoric from politicians, rightwing journalists, MSM, broadcasters, Think Tanks. The nazis wanted genetic supremacy, and used economic burden to achieve their aims. Currently, politicians, MSM, broadcasters and journalists, peddle a not dissimilar rhetoric using economic productivity with economic blame and burden as their method of propaganda and persuasion. Mass killing never starts with injections, starvation, gas, guns, bombs, it starts with words, with a constant drip-feed of othering and propaganda until people are persuaded. What this programme demonstrated is that yes, people can be persuaded. But it also showed us that people can recognise dehumanisation and voice it, those are the voices we must encourage. Susan Sontag, on being asked about what she had learnt reflecting on the Holocaust said that 10% of any population is cruel, 10% is merciful, and the remaining 80% can be moved in either direction. IDS, Jeremy Vine, Helen Whately, Fraser Nelson, Tice, Lee, so many MPs, Mail, Telegraph, Spectator, profs who don't stand up to the daily onslaught, everyone who looks the other way, need to think about which 10% are they? We need to get the 80% to join the merciful 10%.

There are 3 types of autism: 1. Celebrity excuse autism 2. Self identified Tik tok autism 3. Real autism Only one is autism- the rest are an excuse that gives autistic people a bad name.
