In February, frustrated with the course of events, 21 of us decided to write a report on what needs to happen for Venezuela’s political transition to become a sustainable democratic transition… vcprn.tulane.edu/wp-content/…

Stephen Miller is the architect of the administration’s strategy to militarize law enforcement in Latin America. I wrote for @just_security, “…Stephen Miller explained the Trump administration’s strategy for the Western Hemisphere during a conference at the U.S. Southern Command’s headquarters in Doral, Florida. Drug cartels, he declared to Latin American military leaders, are “the ISIS and the al-Qaeda of the Western Hemisphere and should be treated just as brutally and just as ruthlessly.” Miller explained that the U.S. government invited military leaders — and not lawyers — to the conference because “these organizations can only be defeated with military power.” justsecurity.org/133705/shie…
Stephen Miller pushed for Trump's lethal strikes on civilian boats, which many legal experts say are extrajudicial killings. Here's a gift link to our @nytimes investigation on how Miller and Rubio's actions led to the strikes and the attack on Venezuela: nytimes.com/2025/12/27/us/po…

The recent conventional wisdom has been that Rubio would not run in 2028, preferring to do so later in more favourable circumstances. On the one hand, Vance as continuity MAGA has been tarnished by this thumping & that could be to Rubio's benefit. On the other hand, this has also created much more challenging map for Republican prospects in 2028, and you'd think Rubio would take that into account.
“There is one winner” on the Republican side tonight, Trey Gowdy tells Fox News: “it’s Marco Rubio.”

🇻🇪 🏦 Why do Venezuelan banks lend so little when borrowers are paying them back? ↓ ✍️ @MiguelArmaza & Manuel Yanez Bank credit to Venezuela’s private sector is just 3.5% of GDP, compared with 75.1% in Brazil. The gap reflects policy choices as well as Venezuela’s economic crisis. 🗞️ explore the regional comparison → latinometrics.com/articles/h…

A venomous lie from a top US Defense Department official, before an audience of Latin American militaries last week. This evidence-free claim of links between NGOs and vicious criminal groups endangers human rights defenders throughout the hemisphere. youtube.com/watch?v=u5V1wVDo…

El Sayed roasts Douthat, who seems to have tested this line of questioning only on Bari Weiss and Sebag Montefiore before trying it out.
“You brought up Saudi Arabia. You just don’t like the example you brought up.” I don’t know what Ross Douthat thought he was trying to do but Abdul El-Sayed was ready for it.

A chapter on transitional justice suggests that pursuit of victim’s rights should start immediately as well as the establishment of a truth commission. These processes should lead into processes of reparation and memorialization. 16/n

The final version of this report will have a new chapter on infrastructure. It will also take in account the new context provided by the June earthquakes, advances resulting from the negotiation process, the NABEP oil deal as well as the return of María Corina Machado. 17/17
