Only 12 of Brazil's 26 states pay more into Brasília than they get back.
Every year, the federal taxes collected in each state go to the national government in Brasília.
Part of that money comes back to the state and its cities as transfers.
In 2024, São Paulo sent R$1.04 trillion in federal revenue and got R$70 billion back, about 7 cents for every R$1.
Acre sent R$2.4 billion and got R$9.8 billion back, which is R$4.10 for every R$1.
Santa Catarina got 13 cents back on every R$1, Rio de Janeiro got 15 cents and Paraná got 27 cents.
The farm states of the Center-West (Mato Grosso, Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul) got back between 49 and 56 cents.
All 14 states that get back more than they send are in the North and Northeast, led by Acre, Roraima, Amapá and Maranhão.
Across the whole country, R$2.65 trillion in federal revenue came in during 2024 and R$735 billion went back out as transfers, about 28 cents for every R$1.
The rest funds the federal budget, including pensions, federal salaries and social programs paid in every state.
The 12 states that pay more than they get back produced about 81% of Brazil's economy in 2023.
Any investor trying to understand Brazil should start with the states that pay the bill.

🚨 LULA AGORA QUER ABRIR OS SIGILOS. ENGRAÇADO.
Nós abrimos o sigilo do Lulinha na CPMI do INSS.
Deputado do PT deu soco dentro da sessão.
Gleisi e Jaques Wagner gritaram “golpe”.
A defesa do filho dele correu pro Supremo.

Isn’t it telling that the four European countries with the highest government spending as a share of GDP, Finland (~57%), France (~56%), Belgium (~51%), and Germany (~50%), have all underperformed the OECD average in real GDP per capita growth since 2019?
From 2019 to 2024, cumulative real GDP per capita growth was roughly:
• OECD average: 6.4%
• Average for Belgium, France, Germany, Finland: 1,4%
These countries have high human capital, solid institutions, and (until recently) competitive industries. Yet those that tax and spend the most have delivered the weakest living-standards growth.
A large state does not just redistribute, it shapes incentives. High marginal tax rates, extensive regulation, and a growing share of the economy absorbed by public transfers and public-sector employment reduce returns to innovation, risk-taking, and private investment. Resources that could fund new firms, R&D, or capital deepening are instead directed toward entitlements and administrative overhead. Over time, this appears as slower productivity growth, the ultimate driver of prosperity.
Germany’s industrial model and Finland’s high-trust Nordic system once masked some of these effects. Energy shocks, demographic aging, and the sheer scale of the public sector have made them harder to ignore. France and Belgium have lived with this pattern longer, financed by debt accumulation.
The pattern is consistent across advanced economies: beyond a certain point, bigger government throttles the dynamism that raises incomes for everyone. A large state makes countries poorer relative to others, you cannot tax yourself into prosperity.

Future historians will study Europe‘s „green energy transition“ and have some really good laughs. It’s not just one funny idea, that doesn’t make any sense at all, it is a series of decisions that not only hurt European economies, destroy entire industries and countless jobs, but also make Europe geopolitically irrelevant, and limit Europe‘s ability to defend itself.
Let me summarize that genius approach, let’s see which one is the most entertaining:
1. Europe produced more gas than Russia was exporting, then decided to stop. Importing gas instead of producing it yourself, not only makes it more expensive, unreliable as proven by recent events in Russia and the Middle East, but also generates more emissions due to gas liquefaction process and shipping. Purest madness on many levels.
2. Germany switching off nuclear power plants, but keeping coal and gas, not only made energy more expensive, decimated German industrial base, but it also hurts the climate badly. German energy production after the „green energy transition“ generates ten times more emission than France‘s which kept nuclear as the main energy source. If Germany switched off coal power plants first, but kept nuclear, it would have avoided emissions equivalent to Berlin’s emissions in almost a century. Purest ideological madness.
3. High energy prices in Europe causing deindustrialization, jobs and prosperity destruction don’t mean that Europe consumes much less. The same products come now from Asia. The difference is that they cause now much more emissions than they did before. A car built and shipped from China causes 70% more emissions than a car built in Germany, cement twice as many emissions.
How is this even possible? Are European greens and their voters really so naive that they don’t see the deep damage they cause to the economy, geopolitical security and the climate?
What would you say if someone told you that just 15 years ago Europe produced more gas than Russia exported? Shutting down perfectly fine working nuclear plants while keeping coal was not Europe’s first energy-policy absurdity. Europe has gas reserves. Isn’t it really mind-blowing that it sacrificed energy security, industrial base and geopolitical relevance for the green agenda?
It takes deep intellectual flexibility to claim that not producing your own gas but importing it somehow magically helps the climate, especially with the energy- and emissions-intensive liquefaction needed for LNG to be shipped to Europe.
In which parallel mental universe do European greens live?
