There’s a difference between allowing foreign investors to carve up viable British businesses to get a quick return on investment (and killing thousands of jobs) and a state-planned economy.
Poundland is growing and there are viable bids on the table. It should be saved.
No. Businesses must stand and fall according to whether or not they are commercially viable.
That is really hard for employees affected to hear. They work hard and will need and deserve support to find new jobs. But it is a recipe for absolute disaster for the Government to seek to keep companies alive that aren’t able to trade profitably. The high street must reflect what people want and need, and change according to their choices. Otherwise no new businesses would ever come into being.
The only potential exceptions are industries of unique strategic national importance, and Poundland doesn’t fall into category.

Scotland’s pubs have been integral to our community life for generations. It makes you wonder what Labour are going to come after next? @ReformUKScot will always stand up for our communities, our traditions and our way of life.
Who does this idiot think he is? There are no “no-go zones” in Glasgow for ethnic minorities.
Perhaps Ross Greer should get out of his mums box room in Milngavie and actually speak to the communities he is slandering here.
How do we tackle racism in Scotland?

We now have gangs painting the boats their national colours. They are taking the piss.
We’re being invaded from Calais, Normandy - and now Belgium too.
I will deploy the Royal Navy and stop the boats forever.
Roz Foyer’s phoney concern for migrants is as cynical as it is disagreeable.
Scotland does not have an obligation to house, feed, and clothe the world’s poor at our expense.
We have a duty to our fellow Scots and our government should act accordingly.
The official Glasgow City Council social media should not be posting blatant party political material like this.

There’s no shoving (or anything approaching it, Nigel lets Voarden go ahead of him…) but they deliberately include it knowing most people won’t watch it.
Disgusting.
Exclusive:
Nigel Farage's "physical altercation" during the State Opening of Parliament was with the Lib Dem MP Caroline Voaden - and has caused an major row between Reform and the Lib Dems.
Lib Dem sources say Voaden was left "shocked and shaken" after he "shoved" her to secure a place in the procession of MPs to the King's Speech.
Video from the Commons Chamber that day shows Farage and Voaden making their way down from their benches together.
Voaden reported the incident to the Serjeant at Arms and says Farage was asked to apologise - but hasn't.
A Reform spokesman denies any wrongdoing by Farage, saying "it was the Lib Dem MPs being aggressive towards Nigel". Lib Dems say that is "utter nonsense"
Farage said yesterday that the "physical altercation" was the reason he didn't put up a fight to be in the Chamber for the Budget after his prayer card to save a space was removed.
He said he thought that after the row with Voaden, it was "better to avoid conflict".
But in a further twist, a Commons spokesman says Farage's card was only removed because it didn't have a date stamp, which are required to reserve a spot.

These are the stats John Healey doesn’t want you to read.
Unemployment will rise to 5% in 2027.
The tax burden is going up AGAIN to the highest since WW2.
By 2031 we’ll be spending £160bn/year on debt interest alone – up £36bn/year.
Borrowing forecasts for the next 5 years have risen £65bn since March.
Households will be worse off in every single year of the five-year forecast than they were in March.
It’ll take until 2029 to get back to 2019 levels of prosperity.
Growth will be abysmal. GDP per capita grows less than 1% in 2027. It’ll peak at less than 2% per year, despite the AI revolution.
The national debt will stay above 95% of GDP.
We are on a fiscal knife-edge. Britain is Broke. Britain needs Reform.
This pompous and smug attitude to answering questions is just disgusting.
You are paid over £140,000 a year to govern this country and are answerable to the people’s representatives in parliament.
Acting in this manner is insulting and completely unacceptable.
The new habit of SNP and Labour MSPs punching or slapping their tables when speaking to Reform MSPs is so transparent.
Trying to look big and principled but actually looking like spoilt children.
Crime has exploded, purchasing power (the most important metric) is stagnant, and we are losing our national personality.
The Tory and Labour experiment with mass migration must be ended.

Labour and the Tories opened the floodgates to millions of migrants from across the world.
Reform will achieve net negative migration, deport every illegal migrant and reverse this madness.
End of.
The mummies don’t care about being on display in a museum because they are dead.
Their families don’t care because they are also dead. Their friends are also dead.
"The knee-jerk brainlessness is painful to behold. Tory MSP Murdo Fraser – who else? – babbled about mummies being cancelled. How dull, how predictable.
"Fraser describes himself as a Christian. Do the dead require no respect in his faith? Certainly, as an atheist, I’m troubled by the notion of behaving improperly towards the dead.
"What difference is there between a corpse today, and a corpse from 4,000 years ago? Is there a point at which dignity is time-barred? If we can display the bodies of the long-dead, can we also display the bodies of those shouting about "woke museums" should they die tomorrow?
"Would I personally remove dead bodies from museums? Probably not. Do I think there’s an intelligent and interesting conversation to be had about the issue? Undoubtedly. Do I think the curators who run our museums know more than me – and Murdo Fraser – and should be listened to? Of course.
"So do I accept their decision to remove these objects? Yes, if they believe that’s morally right. I’m certainly not going to sit online sweaty-eyeballed and wailing about 'woke gone mad'. I have a life.
"The anti-woke battalions have been cackling about how absurd it is for museums to say that consent is required before a body can be displayed. Again, when they die, can we put the bodies of the anti-woke in Kelvingrove Museum without their consent?"

Today I hosted representatives of Trade Associations Scotland in my role as a member of the finance committee.
I heard about their priorities for the upcoming budget and what barriers they face, expanding apprenticeships, and the overall business environment in Scotland.
Young people deserve a fair wage but it is unacceptable to increase costs on businesses without making employing people more affordable.
We need cheaper energy, less tax on business, and an NI cut for younger workers. This is just going to make the NEET problem worse.
