It was 1994 when I began residency at NY Presbyterian-Cornell under the late, great E Darracott Vaughan. My chief were John Wei, Rob Uzzo & Gary Lemack. Back in NYC w my co-residents Ben Choi and Doug Scherr to celebrate EDV with all who were blessed to have trained under him.

The debate on 1 v 2 yr fellowship misses the point. The 2nd yr is an opportunity to build the foundation for future practice, not just a checkbox to fill to get a certificate. The extra yr is a time to acquire your intellectual skills & set up your next 5+ yrs when done right

Like every other aspect of life, you get out of fellowship what you put in. If it’s only to get a piece of paper, it’s likely not worth it. If it’s to become an expert in a disease space, that is very possibe. I have the best job in the world thanks to fellowship.

The metric should not be judging success is getting to a 100% match rate. One basic issue is we are being unrealistic to think that of <400 graduating residents we are going to fill >50 spots— we really believe 1:8 residents desire to do an onc fellowship? Too many slots rn
