A shooting outside a Belleville synagogue during Yom Kippur services left a police officer critically injured Sunday night, while worshippers inside took cover. “It definitely would have been a massacre,” synagogue member Douglas Lobel said. Read more: thecjn.ca/news/it-definitely…

For nearly three years, pro-Palestinian protests following the Hamas-led terrorist attacks of October 7 have often been portrayed as spontaneous grassroots movements. The terrorism charges laid against Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad—one of the most prominent organizers of pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the GTA—for allegedly acting in association with Hamas cast that narrative in a new light. This significant development comes just weeks after @NGOmonitor reported that numerous pro-Palestinian organizations in the UK have links to extremist groups or officials connected to Hamas, Hezbollah, the IRGC, the PFLP, and the Muslim Brotherhood. After 126 weeks and 10,000 hours of support, VicPD is asking that protestors peacefully conclude the marching portion of their weekly Palestine demonstrations, due to the unsustainable strain on our officers. We strongly encourage organizers and participants to remain on the Legislature lawn, where the environment is safer and more controlled. Shootings, hate mobs on the streets - Canada wasn't always this way. It doesn't have to stay this way. Words must be turned to action. Jewish Canadians must be protected, before this deadly violence starts claiming victims. Deputy FM @sharrenhaskel on @thecjn with @ebessner ⬇️

This afternoon, I’ve instructed my Attorney General to pursue an injunction against the Al-Quds Day demonstration planned for Toronto. Hate, violence and intimidation have no place on the streets of Canada and our government will fight it however we can.

B’nai Brith Canada is continuing to support the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) in its response to a coordinated hate-fueled smear campaign targeting Jewish-affiliated camps and OCA leadership. We are doing so in our capacity as a leading national human rights organization with 150 years of expertise in combatting antisemitism and supporting institutions facing hate-related incidents. Our role is to provide guidance and practical advice to help the OCA and its members, where and when needed, to defend themselves and to ensure Ontario’s camps remain safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces. Accreditation bodies such as OCA exist to uphold standards related to safety, governance, and program quality. They do not adjudicate geopolitical conflicts, nor should they be subjected to pressure campaigns that seek to target institutions or individuals because of their Jewish identity or anyone’s recognition of Israel’s right to exist as the indigenous and ancestral homeland of the Jewish People. Jewish camps, like all community institutions in Canada, must be able to operate free from harassment, intimidation, or discrimination. Attempts to single out Jewish camps are unacceptable, and B’nai Brith Canada will ensure they are confronted with clarity and resolve.

“No public transportation, it’s all been cancelled. People are holding out wads of #Cuban pesos and waving it at our bus as we drive by, hoping that we’ll stop to pick them up,” Cantor Eric Moses told The CJN while he was still in #Havana: thecjn.ca/news/lucky-jewish-… “They have no way to get around the country, and it’s really heartbreaking, and you want to help every single person that you see in the street, but it’s just impossible to help everybody,” Moses said. The Canadians returned Sunday Feb. 8, the day before Air Canada, WestJet and other airlines, announced they were cancelling service to the beleaguered Caribbean island.

Irwin Cotler "In a word, as one who served as a former government minister parliamentarian, Canada’s first Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combat Antisemitism, and now chairing the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, this decision appears to have been made by those who do not have an appreciation for its mutifaceted mandate as set forth above. Finally, the decision to replace all of the above with the Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion is, while valuable in and of itself, no replacement for the multi-faceted mandate described above. Indeed, from my experience, such a Council, while necessary to combat all forms of hate, tends to marginalize or erase the singularity of anti-Jewish hatred, its globality, and its descent into standing threats of intimidation, harassment, violence and even terrorism. This decision will end up, however inadvertently, making Jews in Canada less safe, and feeling less safe." @IrwinCotler thecjn.ca/opinion/letter-can…

“I felt very welcomed when I moved to Canada. It was very easy to come to Canada at that time. I came in 1972 and Pierre Trudeau, who was prime minister, was welcoming all these young Americans to come,” Leonard Schein told The CJN. Originally from California, Vancouver’s Leonard Schein, who moved to Canada in 1972 for graduate school, operated several movie theatres, founded the Vancouver Film Festival in 1981, and led and programmed major film festivals in Montreal and Toronto. Ellin (@ebessner) talks to Winnipeg’s Belle Jarniewski (@BJarniewsk92132), who has spent decades teaching the Holocaust and antisemitism to local schools and universities. Recently, she was named director of the new Manitoba Institute to Combat Antisemitism. “Yelling things like ‘Hamas is coming to get you’. That’s a threat. And people should have been arrested that day,” Jarniewski said. “When threats are made, the laws need to be enforced. And that’s part of the problem because I think that people have seen, understood it as permission to go a step further and further and further.” thecjn.ca/news/we-need-peopl… #Winnipeg #Antisemitism #Manitoba #ShaareyZedek
