Extraordinary people without extraordinary work are a waste of potential. Better to be dumb and maximized than smart and leaving meat on the bone.
The trouble is you don’t know which you are until you truly give it your all. So for no other reason than curiosity, it’s worth seeing the violence you’re truly capable of when you burn the boats and go all in.
I’ve been away from San Francisco for two weeks and here are some things I miss about it:
- the cool air, invigorating and crisp, and the always bright sun lighting up the bright blue ocean
- the uphill walks, reaching the peak to discover oceans views squeezed onto the victorian streets with their tramways
- blasting my favorite house music on full volume in a waymo, breeze blowing through open windows on my way to a client meeting
- the insane inspiration and long passionate conversations when you meet someone who’s in your field. higher social satisfaction than any city in the world for me
- the 6am hikes in the Marin, always ending by a secluded beach climbing rocks and yapping until noon
- running into friends at the gym
- running into friends on the streets
- running into friends at blue bottle
- the addictive feeling of speed, adrenaline and progress
- working from salesforce tower with the most insane bay views and genuinely feeling invincible
- always offering and being offered help. people rooting for you, friends investing in you, the overall atmosphere of abundance
- the food!!
- sunset tennis sessions in mission dolores park
- live jazz and cozy wine bars in north beach
- reading on the sand in crissy field, watching the kitesurfers when flipping the pages

Jet lag is kind of holy to me. I'm tired because I flew. I flew too fast too far. My body misses a different sun
On a real note: wearables really interfere with our interoception. Feeling your body comes through activating specific neuronal circuits, and delegating interoception our bodies have evolved to develop can in my opinion cause problems down the line. There’s something about wearables that hasn’t reached the “gut feeling” and instinct of owning a body and knowing what heals it and what injures it ; HRV, heart rate, breathing rate aren’t enough to understand the deep gut feeling of what makes our own bodies happy. Maybe hormone + nutrition + vitals + performance wearables would. In any case, they’d have to be combined (I can imagine big wearable companies acquiring smaller ones with heavy R&D and proprietary hormone / nutrition / performance inference models as a plausible scenario, until we end up with 2-3 competing products on the market?) and they’d still replace an incredibly human skill - listening to your cells and wellbeing. I fear faulty information, problematic noise and faulty signal processing, lead to placebo effects on wearable users. A workout that would have felt great and fulfilling feels subpar and mediocre when recorded. Lungs and hearts aren’t listened to, Strava is. An oura ring has an inference problem on sleep; a night that normally would’ve felt restful and refreshing now is an obstacle to overcome with an alarming red bar in recovery.
I don’t know. I love wearables. But I also love listening to my body and not always relying on tech that’s a couple years old, when my interoception has evolved over tens of thousands of years to tell me what feels good and what doesn’t.
